The Waksman Institute at Rutgers University seeks to fill a position as a Research Associate. The position is within a laboratory that conducts fundamental biomedical research investigating molecular mechanisms of growth and morphogenesis. The purpose of this position is to assist the research efforts of the lab. The individual will conduct research in investigating growth control, morphogenesis, and tissue mechanics in development and disease states. The laboratory within the Waksman Institute conducts molecular, genetic, cell biological, and biochemical research on questions related to the control of organ growth and morphogenesis. An individual is needed who can conduct research on questions related to biomechanical signaling, organ growth, and development using Drosophila, and shoulkd also have experience in protein purification and characterization. The individual will also assist in training and supervising more junior research staff and students. The individual will report directly to the laboratory Principle Investigator (PI).

Under the broad direction of the P.I., the individual is responsible for conducting research and for supervising trainees. With regard to the research component of the position, the P.I. will act as supervisor, overseeing decisions concerning experiments. After consultation with the P.I., the individual will carry out experiments and protocols and provide verbal and written communication of these results. Must be able to use independent thinking and prioritize for deadlines and submissions. Position requires an ability to plan and interpret details of laboratory experiments. Requires the ability to anticipate reagent needs of the research based on previous experience and research strategy.

Minimum Education and Experience
Experience with Drosophila genetics, experience with immunostaining and confocal microscopy, experience with protein purification and characterization, experience with training and supervising undergraduates in a laboratory setting.

An education in genetics, biochemistry and molecular biology is required in order for the individual to effectively conduct research in this area, and train students in research. The research projects cover a large span of life science topics and technical approaches, including genetics, biochemistry, cell biology, and molecular biology.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in biology or related or subfield thereof (e.g., genetics, biochemistry, biotechnology, molecular biology, cell biology, neurobiology), multiple years of relevant research experience in academic research, and experience mentoring students. Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and should be able to effectively communicate science to a variety of audiences.
Equipment Utilized
Able to stand, lift, bend. Able to occasionally lift and/or carry objects weighing up to 25 pounds. Able to reach and grasp with arms and hands. Work involves possible exposure to malodorous vapors, low dose radiation,
toxic chemicals and acids and presence of carcinogenic substances. Work involves exposure to microbial organisms ( BSL 1 only), Drosophila melanogaster (fruit flies), and tissue culture cell lines.
Long periods of standing and/or sitting.
