In the role, you will be responsible for assigned project designs, coordination, client communications, and associated construction administration. Your responsibilities include the supervision of staff assigned to your projects, ensuring staff utilization, overseeing the work performed by the assigned staff, the fire protection project budget/time management, and ensuring the design is completed within the project design schedule and budget.

Job Responsibilities:

    Application of Knowledge of Building Systems (Conceptual Design)
    • Ensures understanding and compliance with owner's building program requirements and facility or corporate standards related to fire protection systems design.
    • Confirms and reviews applicable codes and standards.
    • Given the scope of design services, the owner's building program and facility standards, building code research and relevant industry standards, establish and document the fire protection systems basis of design and in doing so provide clarification, qualifications and design assumptions regarding relevant design issues.
    • Works with building/facility owner to ensure that the appropriate cost-effective systems/products are utilized in their facility.
    • Works with building owner and construction management team to validate construction cost and provide value engineering options as may be necessary.
  • Design
    • Assist in the establishment of the building fire protection criteria
    • Performs and documents engineering calculations related to the fire protection systems for the purpose of selecting code compliant systems and equipment.
    • Performs systems and equipment selections.
    • Performs layout and sizing of systems and equipment.
    • Drafts or oversees the drafting of the systems and in doing so establishes the appropriate level of drawing detail to ensure completeness and accuracy of design and construction cost.
    • Schedules equipment with the appropriate accessories and remarks.
    • Ensures that there is complete and accurate specification.
    • Coordinates with all disciplines.
  • Construction Support
    • Field inspections and reports.
    • Photograph review.
    • RFI's
    • Bid analysis support
  • Project Management (Design)
    • Supervision of the staff assigned to the projects.
    • Ensures staff utilization.
    • Overseeing the work performed by the assigned staff.
    • Prepares design man-hour estimates for assigned projects.
  • Profitability
    • Designs project within provided design budget and negotiates additional design fees when scope is expanded.
  • Planning/Scheduling
    • Provides direction for what is to be included in design package issue (pricing documents).
    • Works with projects PDP/Project Engineer to ensure that project schedule will be met and complete documents provided for each submission.
  • Professional Development
    • Maintains required licensing CEU.
    • Proactively attempts to receive in-house/out-of-house training to maintain design skills.
  • Leadership
    • Manages assigned staff on the projects.
    • Provides mentoring of assigned staff.
  • Travel
    • Up to 30% yearly

Education/Experience:

  • Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Fire Protection and Safety Engineering Technology
  • Typical minimum of eight (8) years of experience after PE licensure.

Specific Knowledge, Skills, License, Certifications:

  • Licensed Engineer practicing in Fire Protection

Environmental Factors and/or Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, this position is required to have ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations; and the ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights of 10-50 pounds. Requires good hand-eye coordination, and arm, hand and finger dexterity, including the ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard, operate equipment and read application/form information. The associate frequently is required to sit, reach with hands and arms, talk, and hear.

Salary Range:


The base salary range for this position is $115,000 -$180,000. The actual salary will be determined based on the candidate's location, knowledge, skills, and experience.
