About the Department
The Department of Applied Ecology is a vibrant and productive unit within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences that offers a supportive, and collaborative academic setting. Faculty strengths are in the areas of ecology, fisheries, pollinator biology, conservation biology, environmental toxicology, and related fields. Research in these fields drives a strong, well-funded graduate program, leaders in effective extension and outreach, and graduate and undergraduate mentoring, teaching, and advising.

The Department hosts the U.S. Geological Survey's NC Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit and the Southeast Climate Adaptation Science Center, the NC Agromedicine Institute, and faculty of NC State University's Center for Marine Sciences and Technology. Resources available include the Yates Mill Aquatic Conservation Laboratory, Grinnells Aquatic Facilities, Fish Barn, and Pamlico Aquaculture Facility. We offer graduate degrees in Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology as well as concentrations in Ecology and Evolution and Aquatic Sciences and Aquaculture in the Biology Graduate Program.

Essential Job Duties
The Department of Applied Ecology invites applications for a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in ecosystem ecology (50% teaching; 50% research). We seek candidates who conduct innovative, quantitative research that develops and applies principles of ecosystem ecology to address pressing environmental issues.
The incumbent will:

  • Teach two undergraduate courses at the intersection of ecosystem ecology and human dimensions (e.g., related to UN sustainability goals) and a graduate course in the candidate's area of expertise.
  • Enhance departmental strengths in ecosystem ecology and develop a robust, externally funded research program.
  • Develop collaborations with internal and external cooperators (e.g., the USGS North Carolina Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, the Center for Applied Aquatic Ecology, the USGS Southeast Climate Adaptation Science Center, NC Museum of Natural Sciences, NC Wildlife Resources Commission, USDA Southern Research Station, NC State Climate Office).
  • Mentor undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Support the University's mission, vision, and values through their research, teaching, outreach, and service activities.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • A PhD in a relevant field.
Other Required Qualifications

  • Peer-reviewed publications in ecosystem ecology.
  • Grant funding success.
  • Evidence of teaching experience or pedagogical engagement.
  • Ability to provide mentorship and formative research experiences for undergraduate and graduate researchers.
  • Ability to communicate science to various audiences.
  • Commitment to the goals and missions of the Department.
  • Potential to develop an extramurally funded research program and engaging teaching program.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Post-doc experience in a relevant field or related experiences.
  • Experience teaching applied aspects of ecosystem ecology.
  • Experience mentoring students in independent research.
  • Demonstrated potential to develop collaborations with academic and non-academic cooperators.
  • Experience with multidisciplinary tools (e.g., molecular, modeling, generative AI, etc.)
