Job Summary

The Division Manager for the Division of Infectious Diseases is responsible for managing the administrative operations of the Division with an overall annual budget of $25 million. Functions include IT, facilities, education and fellowship administration, contracts and grants, budgetary financial management, strategic planning, research and clinical operations, and human resources. Manages a professional staff of 33 direct and indirect reports comprised of various staff positions. Assumes accountability for decisions made by subordinates. Performs long and short term planning for function. Erroneous decisions or failure to achieve goals results in additional costs and personnel, and serious delays in overall schedules.

The Division Manager is an essential part of the Division's Leadership and provides managerial direction to all of the programs and enterprises within the division and reports to the Division Chief. The Infectious Diseases Division is passionate about its mission of improving the health and wellbeing of infectious diseases patients though its clinical care, research, and educational programs. The primary strength of the Infectious Diseases Division rests in its people-the faculty, staff, and trainees. The Division works hard to maintain a culture in which all are treated with respect, and that career aspirations of all our people can thrive. The Division Manager plays a central role in maintaining and promoting this culture.

The division spans across multiple campuses with faculty and staff located at UCSF Parnassus, Mission Bay, and Mount Zion. The Division Manager is responsible for optimum administration across these sites, solving complex staff/faculty/fellow appointments and funding at UC, VA and ZSFG. The Division of Infectious Diseases consists of 31 faculty, 2 MSP Physicians, 14 clinical fellows, and 55 non-faculty academics and staff, totaling 102 personnel.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

Department Description

The Division of Infectious Diseases consists of 91 faculty, fellows, and staff whose work is grounded in deep commitment the highest standards of clinical care and teaching, as well as, research leading to new approaches to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of infectious diseases. The Division of Infectious Diseases employs and trains leaders in academic, superb clinical researcher scientists and basic scientists, and outstanding clinicians. Our faculty are leading experts in adult infectious diseases.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and at least 6 years of relevant experience and/or equivalent experience/training
  • At least five years of experience hiring and managing high performing employees
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting policies and procedures. Ability to prepare and present complex quantitative analyses, including financial projections and budgets is desired
  • Broad knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques; human resources and risk management planning; accounting and payroll.
  • Excellent financial and analytical skills, including a demonstrated understanding of the concepts of internal controls and the methods of evaluating internal control systems.
  • Broad knowledge of common organization-specific and other computer application programs.
  • Proven ability to organize department work functions in an efficient and effective manner.
  • Strong work ethic
  • Skills to work collaboratively with other locations
  • Demonstrated management and conflict resolution skills to effectively lead and motivate others.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Graduate degree in business, healthcare or related field
  • Familiarity with policies and programmatic guidelines for ACGME training programs and associated funding, institutional guidelines on salary setting for trainees, stipend payments, and the appointment process for all trainees (ACGME fellows, non-ACGME fellows, and postdocs)
  • Familiarity with inpatient and outpatient clinical practice operations
  • Familiarity with campus and university on-line systems, federal and staff funding agency requirements, state and federal human resource regulations, space and equipment inventory rules and regulations, campus internal audit rules and regulations, the campus business and finance bulletin, academic personnel manual, school and department clinical compensation plan, clinical practice rules and regulations, and campus expenditure rules and regulations
