Brief Summary of Job Duties

Under the general direction of the Director of our recently established cryogenic TEM microscopy (SB2EM) facility, we are looking for an exceptional, scientist to serve as its Facility Manager (permanent, full-time position). You will be joining the growing EM community at UC Santa Barbara, work in a stimulating academic and cultural environment within feet of the Pacific Ocean. Primary responsibilities include maintaining the day-to-day running of the facility and training of new users on SPA, MicroED, and support development for correlative light and electron microcopy (cryo-CLEM) and in situ cellular tomography efforts. Whenever applicable you will be responsible for or assist with cryo-EM sample preparation, data acquisition and (pre-)processing. Currently SB2EM hosts a Glacios2 TEM; Aquilos2 cryo-FIB iFLM, and whenever required access to a Titan Krios TEM. The facility serves users from UCSB and around for both academic and industry projects. It is estimated duties percentage be along 30% Facility Management, 25% Facility Operations, 25% Microscopy Operations, 20% Collaborator and Student Training & Safety.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Biophysics, Physics, or related field or equivalent experience and /or training.
  • 4-6 years of experience and training with strong background in modern 3D Cryo TEM.
  • Ability to train, supervise, and direct the work of others.
  • Communication skills to relay complex technical and scientific matters to others.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD Degree in Chemistry, Biophysics, Physics, or related field.
  • Financial planning and management skills.
  • Analytical ability to develop and implement long- and short-range plans, program and project management.
  • Advanced communication skills, both written and verbal, to convey complex information in a clear and concise manner.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

  • 30% Facility Management - Develops expense budget for equipment modifications, improvements, service, and maintenance. Collaborates with faculty committee on Cryo-EM to develop and apply for equipment proposals for acquisition of new facility improvements. Implements access scheduling for image acquisition. Creates rate and recharge for facility charging internal users. Drives process and service improvements, and improves day to day operational efficiency. Provides technical expertise in the development and implementation of policy and standards regarding engineering principles and practices.
  • 25% Facility Operations - Manages regular maintenance for facility equipment, ensuring highest level of operation for all in-house transmission electron microscopes (TEMs). Provides complex technical support for sophisticated biotech-laboratory equipment including maintenance, calibration, repairs and troubleshooting of instrumentation, control systems, experimental apparatuses, computers and peripheral equipment as well as coordinating and scheduling vendor related maintenance and repairs.
  • 25% Microscopy Operations - Operates High-End Cryo TEM microscopes and independent data acquisition capabilities as specified by equipment. Provides Cryo TEM expertise on services for research projects within the scope of Cryo TEM operation. Operates various sample preparation equipment of negative stain and cryogenic sample materials for data acquisition.
  • 20% Collaborator and Student Training & Safety - Provides engineering information and advice to Principal Investigators, Graduate Student Researchers, and/or other faculty group members users in the cryo lab as needed. Supervises lab work on Cryo TEM equipment to assure TEM projects are in line with the lab's goals and objectives. Ensures proper safety protocols are being followed by facility users.
