Reporting directly to the Hospital President and the Network Chief Nursing Executive, this position is accountable for collaborating with other senior executives in developing and executing the strategic plan of the Medical Center. An integral member of the site Executive Team as well as the Network Nursing Executive Leadership Team, this position is accountable for defining, planning, implementing, evaluating and advancing through innovation and research, the scope of practice, professional standards and care delivery systems as they directly relate to patient care, patient satisfaction and quality outcomes for the Medical Center. In collaboration with the Network CNE and senior Nursing leaders, defines and implements a strategic plan for care delivery systems across the Medical Center, which is fully aligned to the Network Nursing strategic plan. This role is responsible for the scope and delivery of nursing services wherever nursing is practiced within the Medical Center. In addition, this position may be accountable for the operations of other clinical departments.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Vice President of Patient Care Services at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Essential Generic Functions:
    • Directs and participates in the development and implementation of the Medical Center's strategic plan, performance improvement program, Human Resources program, and annual operating budget, plans, goals and objectives.
    • Interprets, communicates and assures the implementation of the organization's mission, vision and values.
    • Develops and maintains written policies and procedures that govern nursing practice.
    • Implements and facilitates the direction of professional development and leadership development.
    • Responsible for planning and directing the organization's programs and facilities in accordance with federal, state and local standards, guidelines and regulations.
    • Ensures that Hackensack Meridian Health established programs and clinical standards, based on regulatory bodies' requirements, are followed and in compliance.
    • Develops and directs new programs, operations and services for all areas of outlined responsibilities and as assigned. Works closely with all operating functions of the organization to ensure continuity of programming and services.
    • Coordinates and directs the development and implementation of annual operating and capital budgets related to areas of responsibility.
    • Recruits, hires and supervises competent division, community and department leadership.
    • Disciplines, councils, and settles grievances and both recommend and participate in hire/discharge/transfer of personnel.
    • Acts as a role model for all standards and expectations of leaders at Hackensack Meridian Health.
    • Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
    • Adheres to HMH's Organizational and Managerial competencies and standards of behavior.
  • Key Position Specific Functions:
    • Participates in the implementation and evaluation of HMH's mission, vision, values and strategic plan to align nursing with the overall goals of the Medical Center.
    • Assures that the Magnet standard are incorporated and sustained wherever nursing is practiced in the Medical Center.
    • Develops and tracks performance of balanced measures for areas of responsibility to improve performance in quality, people, financial, patient satisfaction and growth indicators to meet annual organizational goals.
    • Delegates and allocates resources for the design, implementation and evaluation for performance improvement projects and proposed recommendations for areas of responsibility to improve our processes of care and systems for improved patient outcomes.
    • Ensures that services are coordinated and integrated intra and interdepartmentally to demonstrate patient-centered coordinated care to reduce the system, patient, caregiver and community variances to the plan of care.
    • Coordinates and serves as a liaison between the medical support and nursing staff, to ensure that specific issues and problems are communicated and resolved, as appropriate. Follow up regarding incident reports and/or complaints related to the departments under direction and take corrective action to prevent future similar occurrences.
    • Serves as subject matter expert for the handling of nursing labor/management issues. Participate in collective bargaining negotiations including identifying business needs and proposals that support organizational priorities. In partnership with Human Resources, manage grievance/arbitration processes and contract administration activities. Key partner in developing and implementing positive team member relations strategy and strike planning. Collaborate with senior leaders, business units and union officials to develop, enhance and maintain strategic relationships. Participate in and advocates for business needs as necessary at labor management committee meetings. Assist in the development and delivery of training to nursing leadership, union and staff on labor relations.
    • Participates, as an Executive Staff Member of the Medical Center, in various committees of the Medical Center and Region to establish a nursing executive presence for input into key decisions.
    • Represents the Medical Center at various external events such as community and other external organizational functions to promote a positive image of nursing in the community.
    • Provides consultative services regarding our marketing strategy for nursing recruitment/retention and clinical operations to ensure positive outcomes. Innovative with our recruitment/retention efforts related to the advent of the nursing shortage.
    • Oversees the development and implementation of an effective workforce planning strategy to ensure an adequate staffing plan of competent nurses and other staff within their scope of responsibility and practice.
    • Recommends the use of system integration and technology to facilitate workflow processes to ensure quality patient care. Integrates computer, information and nursing science to improve quality care, decrease non-value added work, time interval for workload completion.
    • Provides the organizational infrastructure for ongoing orientation, training, education and professional development for nursing staff in current, new and developing technologies to assure the existence of a competent staff capable of providing effective and efficient patient care.
    • Participates, as an Executive Staff Member of the Medical Center, in the formulation and monitoring of the hospital budgets to ensure equitable distribution of resources.
    • Participates in the development and implementation of major capital projects for the Medical Center to ensure equitable distribution of equipment/facility improvement.
    • Develops and recommends changes to policy, procedure, standards of care based on data-driven decision making and regulatory standards to provide quality patient-centered care based on evidence-based practice.
    • Develops the role of direct and matrix reports through teaching and mentoring to develop a strong cohesive leadership team.
    • Assures the implementation of a planned and systematic process for monitoring and evaluating the quality and appropriateness of the nursing care and treatment of patients to assure the integration of performance improvement activities in operative performance.
    • Strategically directs and coordinates nursing leadership in prioritizing initiatives, projects and resources to establish goal alignment.
    • Provides direction to the Nursing committees and councils based on organizational priorities to ensure that patients with the same nursing care needs receive comparable level of care throughout the Medical Center.
    • Facilitates the development and maintenance of a patient-centered environment to improve patient/family/staff satisfaction on the unit level and in the aggregate.
    • Supports research opportunities in the clinical practice and administrative environment to contribute to the knowledge base of professional practice for all related disciplines.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • A Bachelor's (BA/BS/BSN) and Master's (MA/MS/MSN/MBA/MPA) degree are required. One degree must be in nursing.
  • At least 10 years of progressive leadership in related fields is required.
  • Excellent financial management, delegation and organizational skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
  • Strong strategic planning skills.
  • Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with colleagues, personnel, residents, family members, visitors, and the general public and possess an understanding of people and a sense of accountability, fairness, and consistency.
  • Established analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Established coaching skills that inspire team members, leaders and physicians to execute and comply with network strategies.
  • Capacity to collaborate with diverse populations of team members and physicians to gain consensus and achieve results.
  • Proven writing, public speaking and presentation skills.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

  • PhD or DNP.
  • Experience in labor relations.
  • National nursing administration certification.
  • Proven competence in Microsoft Office Programs: Word, PowerPoint and Excel.

Licenses and Certifications Required:

  • NJ State Professional Registered Nurse License.
