THE SELECTION PROCESS: will be job related and will consist of one or more of the following: education and experience evaluation; written, oral or performance tests; or other assessment methods. The Office of Human Resources reserves the right to call only the most qualified candidates to oral and performance examinations. Oral examinations may include written exercises. Selection process component weights will be determined by further analysis of the job.

Working Environment:

  1. Exposure to dust, dirt, general construction debris, hazardous materials, etc. that may require the use of a respirator.
  2. Exposures loud noise that may require the use of hearing protection.
  3. Essential physical requirements, such as climbing, standing, stooping, crawling, etc.

Physical Demands:

  1. Exposure to work environments as previously indicated
  2. Ability to lift objects that weigh up 50 lbs.
  3. Ability to move objects weighing 100 lbs. or more
Qualifications

Education Requirements

  1. High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  2. Working knowledge of use of a computer, notebook, or pad device with some knowledge of common word processing and database software such as Microsoft Office Suite.
  3. Experience with Computerized Maintenance Management Software system (preferably in AssetWORKS) for trade related work order, personnel timesheets, etc.
  4. Additional trade related training beyond high school is preferred.

Certifications and Licensing Requirements

  1. **Valid Commercial Driver's License, Class A (CDL) with air brake endorsement within six (6) months of employment.**
  2. Valid driver's license and availability of a properly insured personal automobile for use on the job at time of and throughout employment (car allowance provided).
  3. Completion of New Hire Safety and Health Orientation courses within the first three (3) months of appointment (Training and/or testing will be provided by MPS. Employee must obtain the certification within the time allotted. Training modules assigned on the MPS Learning Management System (LMS)).

Experience Requirements

  1. Three (3) years of professional experience in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and heavy equipment.
  2. Experience in the repair of specialized off-road equipment is desirable.
  3. Experience in the work identified in the Position Description and as indicated under Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Ability to perform duties as described in the Position Description, and Essential Functions/ Core Competencies.
  2. Knowledge of and skill in performing:
    1. Diagnosis, adjustment, repair and replacement of various vehicle systems
    2. Engine tune-ups and preventive maintenance
    3. Minor body repair work and touch-up painting
    4. Welding
    5. Maintenance on site-based generators and developing associated inspection reports.
    6. Test drives of vehicles as required to diagnose issues and verify drivability
    7. Reports of any malfunctions of vehicles and equipment so that repair scan be made which will prolong the life of the equipment, ensure continuity of safe operation, and lessen the likelihood of breakdowns at critical moments
  3. Ability to read and interpret various service manuals, parts catalogs, schematics and procedures.
  4. Must be able to complete records and forms.
  5. Ability to assist in developing estimates for projects related to the position.
  6. Effective oral and written communication skills.
  7. Ability to gather data, compile information and prepare field reports as required.
  8. Ability to work mandatory overtime hours as required, whether given advanced notice, or called-in to perform emergency duties.
Responsibilities

  1. Performs diagnosis, adjustment, repair and replacement of various vehicle operating systems and components
  2. Performs complete engine tune-ups and preventative maintenance work
  3. Records and documents work performed on each vehicle and piece of equipment
  4. Performs minor vehicle body repair work and touch-up painting
  5. Performs welding as necessary
  6. Performs maintenance on site-based generators and prepares inspection reports.
  7. Test drives vehicles as required to diagnose issues and verify drivability
  8. Reports any malfunctions of vehicles and equipment so that repair scan be made which will prolong the life of the equipment, ensure continuity of safe operation, and lessen the likelihood of breakdowns at critical moments
  9. Adjusts vehicle options to make fleet ready for respective season; add/removes plows, salters, etc.
  10. Performs emergency service calls and repairs, some being after normal working hours
  11. Works semi-independently and with minimal assistance solving automotive issues.
  12. Provides own hand tools of the trade
  13. Operates and maintains hand and power tools associated with the trade.
  14. Actively supports the MPS Strategic Plan
  15. Perform other related functions as assigned.
