The Position:
Under direct supervision, preserves safe water and sewer utilities. This is accomplished by maintaining and repairing water and sewer lines and taps. Other duties may include ensuring the safety of equipment and interfacing with other City employees and citizens. This position does not provide direction to other employees.

Essential Functions

The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.
  • Lays and maintains water lines by using a backhoe to dig holes, installing, repairing and removing water meters, locating water leaks, inspecting, installing and repairing water lines, tracing, locating and tapping lines for the City and maintaining and repairing fire hydrants.
  • Maintains sewer lines by cleaning and repairing sewer lines, correcting stoppages, repairing manholes, conducting preventative maintenance inspections, testing for infiltration or ex-filtration, repairing roadways and easements and assisting with pump station repairs.
  • Repairs water and sewer taps by excavating to the main, tapping lines, running new services, assisting with the installation, repair and maintenance of water mains, valves, hydrants, meters and wells and logging water lines.
  • Ensures the safety of equipment by performing preventative maintenance on equipment and tools, cleaning and fixing components and changing the oil.

Job Requirements

Education & Experience
High School Diploma or equivalent with no prior relevant experience.

Special Requirements:

  • Must possess a valid Texas Class C driver's license.

  • Texas Class A CDL required or ability to obtain within twelve (12) months from the date of hire.


Physical Demands / Work Environment:
  • Ability to work outside, including in extreme temperatures, wetness, and humidity.

  • Ability to work with mechanical, chemical, electrical, and fire hazards.

  • Ability to stand and walk for long periods.

  • Ability to operate light and heavy equipment and hand and power tools.

  • Ability to lift, push, pull, reach, kneel, crouch, crawl, bend, twist, climb, and balance frequently.

  • Ability to operate city or personal vehicle for business purposes.


Supervision Exercised:
Direct Supervision: Work is normally reviewed in progress and upon completion of each assignment to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and conformance to established standards; autonomy is granted at the task level; work is subject to both general and departmental policies, procedures, and guidelines.
