Position Title Manager, Member Relations (Patrons Circle)

Position Summary
The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world's preeminent scientific and cultural institutions, and has as its mission to discover, interpret and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world and the universe through a wide-ranging program of scientific research, education and exhibition.
The Membership department is seeking a full-time Manager, Member Relations (Patrons Circle). Key responsibilities include the cultivation, retention and stewardship of donors giving to the Museum's upper-level membership and annual giving programs, particularly the Museum's Patrons Circle philanthropic membership program.
A successful candidate will have: 3 years of experience in non-profit development, including frontline, donor-facing experience and high-level writing skills/the ability to seamlessly synthesize relevant information into high-quality professional communications.
Job duties include:

  • Build and maintain relationships with members. Operationalize and implement a multi-touchpoint plan to steward members and donors. Serve as liaison for members, working with the member lounge staff and others as necessary to assist members in-person and via telephone/email.
  • Offer feedback on types of member benefits that would enhance upper-level membership programs. Monitor and ensure that benefits are fulfilled at each level.
  • Manage direct response solicitations of upper-level member and annual fund solicitations.
  • Assist with the personal solicitation of unassigned donors and liaison with Development officers. Manage the solicitation of unassigned upper-level members and annual fund contributors.
  • Plan and handle various cultivation and onsite visits for members and donors as assigned. Interact with and cultivate the experience of upper-level members at member programs.
  • Provide organizational and administrative assistant to the Senior Associate Director and Senior Director, as needed, including proposals and projects for unassigned donors.
  • Provide support, as needed, for all donor and member events.
  • Maintain a work schedule that includes occasional evenings/weekends (for onsite fundraising events, member programs, donor visits, projects, etc.).


The Manager is part of a team working to solicit and secure vital, renewable and unrestricted contributions in support of the Museum's exhibitions, scientific research and educational programming. They support upper-level Museum members, donors and potential members and maintain a strong knowledge of the Museum's collections, exhibitions, policies and membership offerings. The Manager reports to the Senior Director of Membership and Annual Giving Programs.

This role calls for someone highly organized with exceptional interpersonal skills, a solid work ethic and sound judgment. Thoroughness and precision, the ability to prioritize/plan, positivity, professionalism and the ability to plan for and balance multiple projects at once are also essential. The Manager will act as a spokesperson and representative of the Museum, making the most of a constantly deepening understanding of the Museum's mission.
The expected salary range for the Manager, Member Relations (Patrons Circle) is $62,000/annual - $70,000/annual. The AMNH offers an extensive benefits package designed to meet the needs of our dedicated and diverse community.

Pay will be determined based on several factors. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities. The salary and placement offered is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization and depth and scope of experience.
Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • 3 years experience in non-profit development, including frontline, donor-facing experience.
  • High-level writing skills and the ability to seamlessly synthesize relevant information into high-quality professional communications.
  • Fluency in Microsoft Office.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Raiser's Edge, Tessitura or similar fundraising software.
  • Strong knowledge of fundraising principles.
  • Demonstrated experience handling a member or donor program.
  • Demonstrated record soliciting and closing gifts.

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for prolonged periods.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.
  • Must be able to move about the Museum campus.
  • Positioning/change of positioning: Must be able to frequently position oneself/body to accomplish job duties.

    • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling.
    • Climbing: Ascending or descending physical structures.
