Job Summary:

Under the direction and supervision of the Specialty Coordinator/Registered Nurse, provides assistance to nursing staff. Communicates changes in patient status as appropriate. Duties and responsibilities are performed according to standards outlined in the competency based/evaluation tool. The Operating Room Technician will support the mission, vision, values and strategic initiatives of Mary Washington Healthcare and must demonstrate a commitment to quality service to patients, physicians, the public and co-workers.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with the care team in the formation of the patient's plan of care to achieve desired outcomes for patient/significant others based on physician preference cards, current assessment findings, diagnostic reports, and standards of care/practice.
  • Communicates safe therapeutic care for patient throughout the patient's perioperative experience.
  • Prepares OR rooms with appropriate instruments, sutures, supplies, and equipment. Assists the surgical team during operative procedures.
  • Follows aseptic technique in opening sterile supplies and sets up for procedure. Assists in turnover of room between cases.
  • Drapes patients for surgical procedures. Maintains and cares for equipment and supplies.
  • Provides input for changes to physician preference cards according to surgeon's request.
  • Accepts responsibilities for on-call. Collaborates and coordinates patient care with both care team and non-care team members. Initiates action effective in emergency situations.
  • Maintains a safe and orderly environment.
  • Participates in hospital wide infection control plan and quality improvement process.
  • Demonstrates effective communication, customer service, and team building skills.
  • Accepts responsibility for professional growth and development.
  • Coordinates all training, orientation & precepting of new Surgical Technologist.
  • Develops and maintains a comprehensive orientation program for Surgical Technologists.
  • Coordinates and develops staff in-services and training on new procedures, equipment for all the various surgical procedures.
  • Works as a liaison between the operating room and central sterile supply
  • Functions as the Operating Room Technician for a wide variety of complex, extensive, and frequently prolonged procedures with each of the Surgical Service providers, such as General Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, ENT Surgery, Urology, Ophthalmology, Dental, Neurosurgery, Cardiovascular Surgery, Plastic Surgery, and Gynecological Surgery Operates and uses a wide range of highly specialized equipment and disposable supplies used for the various procedures. Examples of such equipment and supplies are autoclaves, fracture table and accessories, urology table and accessories, electrocautery units, laparoscopic video equipment, arthroscopic video equipment, microscopes, electric and pneumatic power equipment, Harmonic Scalpel, internal staplers, cement mixers, a wide selection of internal fixation systems for bone fixation, and total joint replacement sets.
  • Anticipates the surgeon's need of instruments or supplies during an operative procedure.
  • Anticipates and prepares for emergencies or untoward developments during a surgical procedure.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required
  • Graduate of an approved formal program in operating room technology to include OR Technology, Surgical Scrub Tech, or Surgical Technology (6 months experience preferred) OR Licensed Practical Nurse with one year operating room experience (licensed to practice in Virginia required) OR trained Scrub/Operating Room Tech with a minimum of seven (7) years hospital operating room experience.
  • Successful completion of pre-placement/employment evaluation.
  • Graduation from and accredited surgical technologist program with a minimum of 5 years of continuous Operating Room experience Certification as a Surgical Technologist is preferred
  • Experience in all surgical applications
  • Must have a vast knowledge of neurosurgical, general surgery, cardio-thoracic surgery and orthopedic surgical procedures and equipment.
  • Effective December 2021, Registered with the Virginia Board of Medicine as a Surgical Technologist required.
