Job Overview

The Controlled Substances Pharmacy Technician is primarily responsible for coordination of controlled substances including reconciliation of transactions, reporting, auditing, and compliance with regulatory requirements. This position may also spend a portion of time performing the job duties of a Pharmacy Technician; under the direction of a licensed pharmacist and following established policies and procedures, performs a variety of technical procedures to support hospital pharmacy operations.

Department: Pharmacy
Hours per week: 40, eligible for benefits
Shift: Days, 0600-1430. Currently, this position does not require weekends, but that is subject to change. This role does require holidays, per a rotating schedule.

Qualifications

EDUCATION: High School Diploma or Equivalent
EXPERIENCE: Two (2) years of pharmacy technician experience
EQUIVALENCY: Completion of pharmacy technician program may substitute for one (1) year of the experience requirement.
CERTIFICATION(S):

  • State of Colorado Pharmacy Technician (PHAT) Certification
  • Controlled Substances Diversion Prevention Certificate (within 12 months of hire)
  • Certificate through a nationally recognized certification board or body approved by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) such as the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or National Healthcare Association (NHA).
Responsibilities

e.) School age - >5yrs to 13yrs
f.) Adolescent - >13yrs to 18yrs
g.) Adult - >18yrs to 65yrs

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. These examples do not include all of the functions which the employee may be expected to perform.

1. Performs reconciliation of all controlled substance transactions.
2. Collects, monitors and reports on controlled substance transactions not audited through software (e.g. controlled substances used in the operating room)
3. Performs review of controlled substance activity in automated dispensing cabinets.
4. Performs review of discrepancies, overrides and transaction corrections related to controlled substances.
5. Conducts controlled substances audits and the resolution of discrepancies.
6. Compiles a monthly controlled substance inventory report.
7. Researches, compiles and reports any unresolved discrepancies to the Drug Diversion Prevention Officer and the Director of Pharmacy.
8. Manages CII safe in pharmacy by applying safe practices for organizing medications inside the CII safe, labeling all bins, and inactivates medications no longer stocked in pharmacy.
9. Assesses and adjusts inventory levels of formulary-controlled substances.
10. Ensures all controlled substances are bar coded and scanned into inventory system; monitors data, counts and policy compliance of all controlled substance activity
11. Assists with destruction of expired medications and returns to the reverse distributor.
12. Assists pharmacy leadership to ensure that controlled substances distribution practices are in accordance with the Colorado State Board of Pharmacy, DEA and other regulatory agencies.
13. Assists in development, recommendation, and implementation of policies and procedures related to controlled substances distribution.
14. Provides hands-on and written controlled substances training to new hires, and other pharmacy personnel.
15. Assists multi-disciplinary staff in quality improvement initiatives and participates in departmental and hospital committees.
16. Maintains environmental cleanliness in accordance with regulatory and policy requirements.
17. Performs general duties of a pharmacy technician including but not limited to:
a. Prepares unit-dose nonhazardous and hazardous medications and drug supplies for dispensing as directed by a licensed pharmacist
b. Restocks and delivers medications to patient care areas or clinics, as assigned, including automated dispensing machines; assists in resolving discrepancies
c. Prepares non-parenteral nonhazardous and hazardous medications for dispensing including controlled substances; delivers medications.

Guidelines: Fully qualified, full performance or journey level. Guidelines are generally but not always clearly applicable, requiring the employee to exercise judgment in selecting the most pertinent guideline, interpret precedents, adapt standard practices to differing situations, and recommend alternative actions in situations without precedent.
Complexity: Duties assigned are generally complex and may be of substantial intricacy. Work assignment is performed within an established framework under general instructions but requires simultaneous coordination of assigned functions or projects in various stages of completion.
Decision Making: Exercises judgment and discretion, and is responsible for determining the time, place and sequence of the work performed.
Communications: Contacts with team members, clients or the public where explanatory or interpretive information is exchanged, defended, and gathered and discretion and judgment are required within the parameters of the job function.
Supervision Received: Performs work with minimal supervisory oversight. Under general supervision, the employee receives assignments and is expected to carry them through to completion with substantial independence. Work is reviewed for adherence to instructions, accuracy, completeness, and conformance to standard practice or precedent. Recurring work clearly covered by guidelines may or may not be reviewed.

Salary Information

Annual Salary Range (Based on 40 hours worked per week): $48,962.61 to $73,443.91
Hourly Salary Range: $23.54 to $35.31
