Python Test Automation Engineer/sdet

Job Summary

We're looking for a software engineer with an embedded systems background who can read technical documentation (including hardware specs, datasheets, and firmware interface docs), gather program requirements, and turn them into executable test code. You will handle on-demand requests for new and changing test requirements. You will deliver code that validates them quickly on embedded targets and hardware-in-the-loop setups. You should also be able to debug and unit test your own code, not just rerun existing flows.

Education

* BS or MS in Computer Engineering, or a closely related field such as Electrical Engineering or Computer Science with an embedded focus. Equivalent practical experience will be considered.

Must-Have Skills

* Strong hands-on Python skills. You should write original code, not only run existing scripts or processes.

* Hands-on embedded systems experience. This includes firmware or embedded software on microcontrollers or SoCs, and how software interacts with hardware.

* Experience with failure analysis and diagnostics on embedded devices. This includes fault isolation, failure reproduction, and root-cause analysis.

* Experience with embedded diagnostic data. This includes boot logs, panic and crash logs, core dumps, and device telemetry.

* Experience testing or validating embedded devices. This includes bring-up, hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing, and fixtures in a lab environment.

* Working knowledge of hardware communication interfaces and protocols such as UART, SPI, I2C, USB, and CAN, plus serial and device-level debugging.

* Ability to use lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, power supplies, and multimeters to validate and debug behavior.

* Ability to translate requirements into working code in real time, in Python and other scripting languages (such as Lua).

* Unit testing experience. You can write and run unit tests to validate your own code.

* Ability to debug your own code with debuggers, breakpoints, logging, and unit tests. Experience with embedded debug tools (e.g., JTAG/SWD, serial consoles) is a plus. Rerunning an end-to-end flow doesn't count.

* Ability to run and debug code within various software suites.

* Experience with end-to-end testing and production software environments, including hardware/firmware test stations and diagnostic tooling.

* Experience with dry runs, log analysis, issue reproduction, and triage. You can separate hardware, firmware, and test-code root causes.

* Ability to read technical documentation and extract program and test requirements, including schematics, datasheets, and register maps.

* Ability to document findings and communicate failure root causes clearly to cross-functional hardware, firmware, and software teams.

* Strong verbal communication. You can explain your thought process, design decisions, and workflow without prom pting.

* Quick turnaround on on-demand or changing requirements.

* Flexibility with work hours when project needs require it.

* Ability to work onsite in Cupertino, 5 days a week.

Preferred Skills

* Experience with Lua.

* Working knowledge of C/C++ for firmware-level understanding and test tooling.

* Knowledge of automation and sequence engines.

* Experience building or extending test automation frameworks, not only consuming existing ones. Experience with hardware abstraction layers or instrument control (e.g., PyVISA, SCPI) is a plus.

* Proficiency in C#.

* Working knowledge of SQL.

* Familiarity with RTOS concepts, bootloaders, or low-level driver development.
