BID/JOB ANNOUNCEMENT FOREMAN OF HOISTING ENGINEERS-MECHANICS DEPARTMENT OF FLEET AND FACILITY MANAGEMENT Bureau of Fleet Management Number of Positions: 1 (Additional vacancies possible pending budget approval) Starting Salary: $72.80/hour This position is open to the public and all current City employees covered under the City's collective bargaining agreement with Operating Engineers - Local 150 Heavy Equipment (Bargaining Unit 42). Select your correct bargaining unit FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS WILL RESULT IN A REJECTED BID APPLICATION Applications for this position will be accepted until from 9/21/26 until 11:59pm CDT on 10/5/26 The Foreman of Hoisting Engineers-Mechanics supervises Hoisting Engineer-Mechanics engaged in the repair and maintenance of heavy vehicle and off-road equipment including excavators, hi-lifts, and other construction equipment at service garages or in the field. ESSENTIAL DUTIES * Scheduling and overseeing preventive maintenance on assigned equipment. * Monitoring Mechanics conducting diagnostic tests and assessing problems and malfunctions. * Inspecting repairs performed by Hoisting Engineer Mechanics. * Monitors and ensures efficient operating shop procedures. * Assists in troubleshooting complex mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues with heavy duty equipment. Maintains work records and productivity records Additional duties may be required for this position. Location: Northwest Maintenance Garage; 4233 West Ferdinand Street Days: Monday - Friday Hours: 7:00AM - 3:30PM THIS POSITION IS IN THE CAREER SERVICE Qualifications
Successful completion of a US Department of Labor registered apprenticeship training program as an Operating Engineer - Heavy Equipment Technician and journeyman status, plus four (4) years of journey-level experience in the repair and maintenance of heavy vehicle and off-road equipment, OR Should the above criteria not be fulfilled, the following options are available: Eight (8) years of journey-level work experience in the repair and maintenance of heavy-duty/off-road equipment and the diagnoses and repair of electronic fuel injection systems OR Successful completion of an industry or company sponsored apprenticeship training program as an Operating/Hoisting Engineer, plus six (6) years of journey-level experience in the repair and maintenance of heavy vehicle and off-road equipment A commercial driver's license (CDL) as issued by the State of Illinois is required WORKING CONDITIONS * Exposure to loud noise, fumes, or dust, oily or wet environment * Exposure to hazardous conditions (e.g. heavy machinery) EQUIPMENT * Standard office equipment (e.g., telephone, printer, photocopier, fax machine, calculator) * Computers and peripheral equipment (e.g., personal computer, computer terminals, hand-held * computer) * Personal protective equipment (e.g., hard hat, shoes, glasses, gloves, vest, pads) * Standard tools and equipment used in servicing heavy off-road equipment (e.g. power tools, * welding equipment, hand tools) * Computerized testing and diagnostic equipment (e.g. computerized engine analyzers) * Jacks and hoists PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS * Ability to walk and stand for extended or continuous periods of time * Ability to quickly bend, stretch, twist, or reach out with one's body, arms, and/or legs * Ability to operate applicable hand tools, power tools, and equipment SELECTION REQUIREMENTS This position requires applicants to complete an interview. Candidates may be required to complete a supervisory assessment. Test results will be sent out by the Department of Human Resources after test results have been analyzed and compiled. The interviewed candidate(s) receiving a passing score on the test and possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position will be selected.
