The Senior Manager, Maintenance is the senior maintenance leader for an assigned manufacturing business and has overall accountability for maintenance strategy, organizational performance, asset reliability, and maintenance execution. This role leads through maintenance managers and their teams to establish a disciplined maintenance operating model, align resources across operating areas, improve equipment availability, and protect the long-term health of critical assets. As a member of the business leadership team, the Senior Manager advises leaders on asset risk, maintenance capacity, capital priorities, workforce capability, and equipment lifecycle decisions.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Set and lead the maintenance strategy for the assigned business, including organizational structure, resource allocation, reliability priorities, performance expectations, and long-range asset plans.
  • Lead through maintenance leaders, holding each organization accountable for safe execution, equipment performance, cost management, workforce capability, and consistent application of maintenance standards.
  • Establish and govern a common maintenance operating model, including work identification, planning and scheduling, preventive and predictive maintenance, outage management, backlog control, equipment history, and work-order quality.
  • Serve as the senior maintenance advisor to business and site leadership, providing recommendations regarding asset risk, business continuity, operating constraints, maintenance investment, and equipment lifecycle strategy.
  • Direct the prioritization and deployment of maintenance labor, contractors, technical resources, and funding across operating areas based on safety, asset risk, and business need.
  • Own maintenance and reliability performance for the assigned business; use operating data, failure analysis, and business impact to prioritize corrective actions and eliminate recurring losses.
  • Provide executive oversight for major outages, shutdowns, critical equipment failures, and high-risk maintenance activities, holding area leadership accountable for readiness, coordination, execution, and post-event improvement.
  • Develop and manage the maintenance operating budget, labor strategy, contractor model, spare-parts priorities, and long-range resource plan for the assigned business.
  • Partner with engineering, operations, and finance to establish capital and asset-management priorities, develop maintenance business cases, and guide repair, replacement, and lifecycle decisions.
  • Establish and monitor maintenance performance measures, including planned-work percentage, schedule compliance, preventive-maintenance completion, backlog health, downtime, reliability, cost, and contractor performance.
  • Build organizational capability by assessing leadership and technical needs, developing maintenance managers, strengthening succession plans, and establishing clear expectations for performance and accountability.
  • Promote a culture of safe work, ownership, disciplined problem-solving, continuous improvement, and collaboration between maintenance and operations.
  • Ensure maintenance activities comply with applicable environmental, health and safety requirements, company standards, quality systems, and regulatory obligations.
  • Represent the maintenance organization in site and business-level planning, operating reviews, capital discussions, workforce planning, and cross-functional initiatives.
  • Partner with other Senior Managers, Maintenance to share resources, standardize practices, and maintain consistent maintenance leadership across the site.
  • Build productive labor-management relationships and support consistent administration of collective bargaining agreements, work practices, and workforce planning in partnership with Human Resources and Labor Relations.
  • Provide leadership during off-shift or emergency events as business conditions require.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, maintenance, operations management, business, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in industrial maintenance, reliability, engineering, or manufacturing operations, including at least 5 years leading managers or a complex, multi-department maintenance or technical organization.
  • Experience supporting heavy industrial, metals, chemical, or other asset-intensive manufacturing operations.
  • Demonstrated responsibility for maintenance budgets, contractor resources, capital planning, organizational strategy, and performance across multiple operating areas or value streams.
  • Demonstrated experience leading maintenance planning and scheduling, preventive and predictive maintenance, shutdowns, reliability improvement, organizational change, and maintenance cost management.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience leading maintenance across multiple operating areas or value streams.
  • Experience in a union-represented manufacturing environment.
  • Working knowledge of computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), reliability-centered maintenance, root cause analysis, and Lean or continuous-improvement methods.
  • Experience developing capital plans and executing complex capital or equipment-reliability projects.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong understanding of maintenance and reliability business value drivers and their impact on safety, quality, throughput, delivery, and cost.
  • Ability to translate business objectives into clear maintenance strategies, priorities, performance measures, and resource plans.
  • Sound financial judgment, including budget ownership, cost control, business-case development, and capital prioritization.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead through influence, align cross-functional stakeholders, and make timely decisions in a complex operating environment.
  • Strong coaching and talent-development capability, with a record of building accountability and leadership depth.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with executives, technical professionals, front-line leaders, skilled trades employees, and union representatives.
