Location: This is a hybrid (virtual/onsite) position with required onsite days on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday assigned to Parnall located in Jackson, MI. The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package is available for those that qualify).

General Summary of Job Responsibilities

The Renewables Engineer is responsible for the design and technical oversight of Consumers Energy's clean energy systems, including solar, battery energy storage, and wind generation assets. This role is primarily focused on developing project designs, conducting design reviews, and providing technical expertise throughout the project lifecycle. The incumbent will participate in contract negotiations with renewable energy developers and support the implementation of the Company's renewable energy strategy.


Additionally, the Renewables Engineer will ensure compliance with renewable energy and clean energy portfolio standards, oversee the registration of renewable energy resources with MIRECs, manage renewable energy credit (REC) portfolios, and provide expert testimony regarding renewable energy compliance matters before the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Monitor the performance of renewable energy systems and implement modifications as needed to optimize efficiency and reliability.
  • Develop engineering plans, specifications, and designs for renewable energy systems.
  • Prepare technical reports and analyses detailing the results of feasibility studies and project evaluations.
  • Conduct feasibility assessments to determine the viability of new renewable energy projects.
  • Design and support the development and construction of renewable energy facilities, including solar, wind, and hydroelectric generation systems.
  • Provide expert testimony and technical support in regulatory proceedings before the MPSC.
  • Manage renewable energy credit (REC) portfolios and make adjustments as necessary to ensure compliance with Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS) and other regulatory requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Mathcad, and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Proficiency with engineering design and calculation software.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking abilities.
  • Familiarity with energy storage systems, solar photovoltaic (PV) technologies, and wind generation systems.
  • Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC).
  • Familiarity with Michigan's 2023 energy legislation, including Public Act 235.
  • General understanding of the MPSC regulatory and compliance processes.

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program with two (2) or more years of experience utilizing energy modeling software.

    • [OR]Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from a non-ABET accredited program plus a Professional Engineering license with two (2) or more years of experience utilizing energy modeling software.
