What to Expect

Tesla's mission is to accelerate the world's transition to sustainable energy. This requires fast paced innovation and execution.

The Document Systems team supports Tesla's mission by providing world-class systems for document management including generation, e-signing, storage, lifecycle administration, security, and audit support. In this role you'll be building and maintaining these systems. Our documents touch almost every part of the Tesla organization globally and are key to supporting every vehicle we deliver, every energy product we sell, and every finance contract and insurance policy we set up. They're designed for external customers, internal team members, government agencies, and many other discerning stakeholders.

As a Software Engineer, you will help build and scale Tesla's document systems platform, a core system that supports vehicle, energy, insurance, and service transactions worldwide. Millions of customers interact with Tesla through these mission-critical documents every day, making this a highly visible, high impact role. You must possess exceptional software engineering skills, attention to detail, and a strong commitment. You will work closely with engineering, product, and operations teams to design and deliver reliable, high-quality platform capabilities that support business-critical workflows at a global scale.

What You'll Do
  • Design, build and operate the services behind a document validation platform - ingestion, classification, extraction and validation - as resilient RESTful microservices in C#/.NET 8 and Python, containerized with Docker and backed by MySQL schemas you help shape
  • Integrate and tune the document-understanding components at the core of the product - OCR, layout models, vision-language models and embedding-based retrieval - owning the cost and accuracy tradeoff between cheap deterministic methods and expensive model calls
  • Build the guardrails around every model-backed step: confidence thresholds, ordered fallback chains, retry and dead-letter handling, and human-review queues, so that an uncertain, wrong or unavailable model degrades the service rather than breaking it
  • Treat prompts and model configuration as versioned code - measured against a regression set, reviewed like any other change, and rolled out deliberately rather than edited in production
  • Own the evaluation and test strategy for a pipeline that is part deterministic and part probabilistic: integration suites for service contracts, accuracy regression against labelled sets for the model-backed steps, and both wired into CI/CD
  • Define and hold the metrics that decide whether this is working - straight-through processing rate, false-accept rate, review queue latency - and use them to direct where model spend goes
  • Take production ownership: debug live issues across the pipeline and invest in the observability that makes "why was this document classified this way?" a two-minute question rather than a two-day one
  • Raise the bar through code review, and write the documentation that lets another team adopt the platform without reading your code - the difference between a service and a platform

What You'll Bring
  • 6+ years of hands-on experience in software development, with a focus on MySQL, Docker, CI/CD, Git, Microservices, Integration Testing, and REST API development
  • Basic understanding of microservices architecture principles and RESTful API design
  • Exposure to MySQL databases and basic database management skills
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and version control using Git
  • Eagerness to learn and adopt new technologies and best practices
  • Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication
  • Passion for sustainable technology and a strong interest in contributing to the automotive industry
  • Experience shipping production systems in which an ML model is a component (not the core product), including designing robust handling for model failures, uncertainty, and downtime
  • Hands-on experience with OCR, layout models, vision-language models (VLMs), embedding-based retrieval, and treating prompt engineering as a rigorous engineering discipline rather than an art
