Job Summary

The Fire Alarm Technician is responsible for the installation, inspection, testing, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of fire alarm systems. This role ensures systems operate efficiently and effectively to minimize downtime and maximize performance. The technician works closely with customers to communicate system status, provide recommendations, and ensure compliance with applicable codes and safety standards. The position requires technical expertise, strong customer service skills, and the ability to work independently while supporting project objectives.

Job Responsibilities




  • Read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, submittals, specifications, schematics, riser diagrams, and technical documentation.



  • Install, inspect, test, troubleshoot, and maintain fire alarm systems in accordance with applicable codes and customer requirements.



  • Perform technical reviews of project documentation and system designs.



  • Install cabling, mount devices, wire control panels, and complete system programming and testing.



  • Supervise and inspect installations to ensure compliance with project specifications and quality standards.



  • Utilize hand tools and power tools to complete installation and service activities.



  • Evaluate and diagnose equipment issues and identify corrective actions.



  • Provide customers with recommendations for efficient and cost-effective system repairs and upgrades.



  • Perform preventive maintenance on customer equipment.



  • Maintain accurate records including timesheets, service reports, installation documentation, and inventory transactions.



  • Stay current on new products, software updates, industry technologies, and applicable regulations.



  • Adhere to all company and customer safety policies and procedures.



  • Provide guidance and support to installation assistants and junior technicians as needed.



  • Deliver professional customer service and maintain positive customer relationships.



  • Perform additional duties as assigned.




Job Requirements




  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience testing, maintaining, servicing, and installing fire alarm systems.



  • Experience with access control systems and CCTV systems preferred.



  • Experience as an apprentice electrician, low-voltage technician, or similar technical role.



  • Knowledge of fire alarm systems, access control systems, CCTV systems, and related low-voltage technologies.



  • Working knowledge of software applications and communication technologies related to fire and life safety systems.



  • Ability to read and interpret CAD-generated drawings, building blueprints, and technical schematics.



  • Understanding of basic electronics and electrical theory.



  • Proficiency with personal computers and Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Access.



  • Knowledge of applicable industry codes and standards, including NFPA and NICET requirements.



  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.



  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.



  • Strong organizational and time management skills.



  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects simultaneously.



  • Demonstrated customer service and interpersonal skills.



  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.



  • Ability to perform effectively in high-pressure situations.



  • Valid driver's license required.




Education




  • High school diploma or equivalent required.



  • NICET certification required.



  • Formal training in electronics, electrical theory, fire alarm systems, or related disciplines preferred.



  • Factory training and manufacturer certifications preferred.




Work Experience




  • Five or more years of experience in fire alarm installation, testing, maintenance, and service.



  • Experience leading or directing installation assistants or junior technicians preferred.



  • Experience working directly with customers in a service-oriented environment preferred.

Additional Job Details (Commute, Attendance, etc.)




  • Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM.



  • Travel requirements: Less than 5% travel.



  • Must be able to stand, walk, climb, sit, and use hands and fingers throughout the workday.



  • Must be able to ascend, descend, and work from ladders exceeding 30 feet in height.



  • Must be able to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds.



  • Must be able to perform reaching, grasping, and carrying activities.



  • Must be able to safely operate mobile work platforms and articulating man lifts after receiving required training and certification.



  • Work is primarily performed indoors with occasional outdoor work subject to varying weather conditions.



  • Must be able to observe workplace hazards at a distance and read detailed written information at close range.



  • Work environment noise levels are generally moderate.



  • Must maintain compliance with all workplace safety requirements.
