Position Description and Summary

The University of New Mexico invites applications for the position of Staff Interpreter for Career Services. UNM Career Services supports the mission, academic programs, and advancement of the University of New Mexico.

Under general supervision by the Manager of Career Counseling, the Staff Interpreter will provide signed language for deaf and/or hard of hearing staff delivered primarily in an office and academic setting. This position will translate spoken materials into sign language for a career development facilitator staff member during meetings, events, and one-on-one and group sessions with students, faculty, staff, and community members.

The successful candidate must demonstrate a high degree of organizational skills, self-motivated work style, mature decision-making ability, strong interpersonal communication skills, and the desire and ability to directly support another staff member in fulfilling the responsibilities of their position.

The Staff Interpreter will be an active member of the Career Services team and will provide a range of administrative and other duties during work hours when not scheduled for interpreting.

This position is part-time, 20 hours per week. Expected work hours will typically be between 8:00am-5:00pm Monday through Friday, with the possibility of occasional evening or weekend hours. This is a fixed term position. No remote work is allowed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

  • Ability to interpret and transliterate proficiently in American Sign Language and Signed English.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to provide competent signed interpreting services in a variety of operational contexts.
  • Ability to demonstrate excellent SLI methods and techniques and to mentor SLI practicum students.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the principles of ethical behavior set by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.
  • Demonstrated experience successfully working collaboratively with team members to achieve shared goals.
  • Superior time management, organizational, planning, and scheduling skills.
  • Ability to adapt to changing circumstances.
  • Administrative, coordinating, and recordkeeping skills.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • No or very limited physical effort required.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
  • The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.

Conditions of Employment
  • Must maintain certification status with a certification eligible for New Mexico licensure, which may include any of the following: RID IC/TC Certification; RID CT or CI Certification; RID/NIC Certification Level or equivalent; BEI Advanced; BEI Master; BEI IV: BEI V: BEI Level IV Intermediary; BEI Level V Intermediary.
  • Must maintain valid status with a New Mexico Provisional Signed Language Interpreter's License.
  • All regular, non-temporary positions assigned to this classification are represented by a labor union and subject to the terms and conditions of the US-UNM Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Must maintain certification status.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.


Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Certification/Licensure: New Mexico Community Signed Language Interpreter License and at least one certification from this list: RID IC/TC Certification; RID CT or CI Certification; RID/NIC Certification Level or equivalent; BEI Advanced; BEI Master; BEI IV; BEI V; BEI Level IV Intermediary; BEI Level V Intermediary OR New Mexico Provisional Signed Language Interpreter's License and Candidacy for RID or BEI Certification (proof of passing score of the RID knowledge exam or the BEI TEP exam).

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

  • Previous experience working in an academic setting.
