The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is offering opportunities for CDL Operators, Mechanics, Clerical Dispatchers, Semi-Skilled Laborers, and Tradesman Helpers in the Seasonal Winter Maintenance Program for the 2026-2027 season (September-April). DESCRIPTION OF WORK

Whether you are looking for extra income during the winter months or exploring a path toward a future permanent role, PennDOT offers meaningful opportunities to serve communities across Pennsylvania. Positions are filled based on operational needs, so availability may differ by county.

Winter CDL Equipment Operator ($23.46)
  • Performs a wide range of winter roadway tasks, including clearing snow, directing traffic in active work zones, supporting equipment maintenance and minor repairs, assisting with guide rail upkeep, and unloading materials needed for safe winter operations.

Winter Dispatcher ($17.73)
  • Dispatches equipment operators during winter events to support safe and efficient operations. Handles a variety of clerical duties that keep communication, documentation, and workflow running smoothly.

Winter Mechanics (Diesel & Automotive Mechanics) ($25.47 - $28.94 based on title)
  • Performs maintenance and repair on PennDOT equipment and diesel-powered vehicles, including heavy trucks over 26,001 pounds, graders, backhoes, front end loaders, and similar machinery. Completes routine inspections, services components, and repairs parts to ensure all fleet vehicles and equipment operate safely and efficiently in accordance with department standards.

Winter Trades Positions (Tradesman Helper & Semi-Skilled Laborer) ($18.46)
  • Performs routine maintenance and repair on vehicles, equipment, and related parts to support safe and reliable winter operations. Helps ensure all fleet equipment functions efficiently and meets department standards throughout the season.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

Transportation Equipment/CDL Operator:

  • To be eligible, you must have:
    • Successful completion of the Transportation Equipment Operator Trainee Program employed by the Commonwealth of PA; or
    • Graduation from a Commercial Driver's License Training School; or
    • An equivalent combination of experience and training.
    • Special Requirements: ALL positions require possession of an active PA Class A or B CDL or equivalent with the Air Brake (L) Restriction removed; ALL positions require possession of a valid Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations; ALL employees must obtain an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders within the probationary period; CERTAIN positions may be required to obtain and maintain CDL endorsements and certifications necessary to operate specific pieces of equipment; CERTAIN positions require operation of vehicles or equipment with a manual transmission. ALL positions are subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.

Radio Dispatcher:
  • To be eligible, you must have:
    • Previous clerical or radio dispatching experience, including the utilization of electronic communications equipment and visual display equipment is preferred, but not required.

Diesel & Construction Equipment Mechanic:
  • To be eligible, you must have:
    • Successful completion of the commonwealth's Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee program; or
    • Two years of journey level mechanic experience in the diagnosis and repair of automobiles, heavy trucks, or construction equipment, which includes one year of experience in the diagnosis and repair of diesel vehicles or equipment; or
    • An equivalent combination of experience and training.
    • Special Requirements: ALL positions require a possession of a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License; ALL positions require a valid Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations; ALL employees must obtain an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders within the probationary period; CERTAIN positions may be required to obtain and maintain CDL endorsements and certifications necessary to operate specific pieces of equipment; CERTAIN positions may require employees to possess a valid Pennsylvania Class 1, 4, or 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification on the first day of employment; CERTAIN positions require operation of vehicles or equipment with a manual transmission. ALL positions are subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.

Auto Mechanic
  • To be eligible, you must have:
    • Four years of experience in the automotive mechanic trade; or
    • Completion of an approved apprenticeship; or
    • Any combination of experience and training.
    • Special Requirements: CERTAIN positions include the possession of an active PA license of the class appropriate to the vehicle operated and inspected; ALL positions require possession of an active PA Inspection Mechanic Certification, Class 1 at minimum.

Tradesman Helper
  • To be eligible, you must have:
    • Previous experience working with Auto Mechanics is preferred, but not required.
    • Special Requirement: Certain positions require possession of an active non-commercial PA Class C driver's license or equivalent.

Semi-Skilled Laborer
  • To be eligible, you must have:
    • One year of experience in laboring work including the use of tools and equipment used in maintenance or construction; or
    • An equivalent combination of experience and training.
All positions require applicants to perform the essential job functions.
