GRE HERC Services LLC (GHS) has an opening for a full-time Relief Shift Supervisor at its downtown Minneapolis facility. GHS operates the Hennepin Energy Recovery Center (HERC), on behalf of Hennepin County. HERC plays a vital role in waste management, converting garbage into energy for the electric grid and steam for nearby buildings, while promoting environmental sustainability. In the Relief Shift Supervisor position, you provide relief plant operations leadership as required to cover the Shift Supervisor position during PTO and other absences, including the monitoring of the boilers, turbines, and steam plant. You optimize operations to ensure the efficient conversion of MSW to maximum output of generation. You also ensure the safe, reliable operation of the facility within all environmental limits and permits.

Responsibilities of this position include:

  • Ensure utilization of standard operating procedures\processes through knowledge sharing and identification of business improvements
  • Ensure compliance with safety policies and procedures, laws and regulations. Reports and investigates accidents, maintains safety awareness, and promotes all aspects of GRE HERC Services (GHS) safety program. Conducts regular safety meetings with crew teams
  • Ensure continuous compliance with facility operating permit and other regulatory requirements
  • Acts as expert and mentor to department staff members encouraging knowledge transfer among staff
  • Establish performance goals in support of the department goals and facility strategic imperatives. Provide regular feedback with all assigned employees
  • Prepare and justify training for employees while providing support for training and development to employees
  • Promote positive employee accountability, responsibility and relationships in a self-directed work team environment
  • Facilitate conflict resolution between the staff members, GHS departments, and others
  • Recommends staffing needs in support of business needs
  • Utilize and teach tools and concepts of continuous business improvement
  • Familiar with collective bargaining agreement and participate in discussions and meetings, dispute resolutions and other labor/management relations
  • Prepare reports of unusual occurrences, emission exceedances, equipment failures and other reports required by the regulatory agencies or GRE HERC Services management
  • Prepare recommendations and justification for plant betterment projects
  • Facilitate meetings to determine root cause and find solutions to operating or equipment upsets and/or failures

To qualify for this position you must:

  • Possess an Associate's degree in power plant technology or power process or have equivalent experience
  • Two-year technical degree in electrical, instrument and control or mechanical related field or equivalent experience preferred
  • A minimum of three (3) years progressively responsible experience including directing or leading work in a solid fuel fired plant operations and proven leadership experience is required
  • Must have the ability to achieve and maintain the MN waste combustor full operator certification within 6 months
  • Possess at least a First-Class A Engineer's license and get the Chief A Engineer license within 6 months of becoming eligible
  • In depth knowledge and understanding of a waste combustor power facility to direct all plant operation activities
  • Knowledge and ability to develop and implement detailed plant operation resource planning for immediate and long term needs
  • Must have understanding of electrical circuits, voltage, amperage, excitation, control principles of relaying, turbine generator construction and operation, principles of combustion, high pressure steam generating units, heat transfer and basic knowledge of water treatment
  • Must have basic understanding of mechanical and electrical repair to advise shift craft maintenance groups
  • Must possess the ability to think clearly and act quickly during times of emergency to minimize damage to personnel and equipment
  • Ability to develop procedures and practices as well as the ability to recognize needs and identify key support resources
  • Ability to communicate effectively and concisely both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to read and understand P&ID's, logic drawings and instruction manuals
  • Ability to provide effective leadership and direction to work force to motivate employees to optimum level of performance in a team-based organization
  • Ability to direct all facility activities to anticipate and take actions required to minimize production loss and maximize potential plant efficiencies
  • Ability to recognize and ensure compliance with safety and environmental procedures, laws and regulations in support of GHS' safety program and environmental management system
  • Complete a successful background check, drug/alcohol test and references

Working Conditions:

The schedule for this position could be 4x4 12-hour shifts days and nights when covering shifts with a regular schedule of four 10-hour days M-F when not covering shifts. This position is designated as a safety-sensitive position for drug, cannabis and alcohol testing purposes.

Compensation and Benefits:

Pay range: $119,583 to $155,427 (dependent on experience and qualifications)
