Department Description

OPS Room Ast 1

This position description has been designed to indicate the general nature and level of work performed by employees within this classification. It is not designed to contain or be interpreted as a comprehensive inventory of all duties, responsibilities and qualifications which may be required of the employee assigned to the position.

The employee in this role must be knowledgeable of professional standards, practices and guidelines of the Perioperative area. Additional responsibilities of this position include aiding and support services in the clinical and non-clinical areas of the operating room. The incumbent also works alongside other support staff and participates as an ORA team member with responsibilities for maintaining the O.R. environment. The employee in this role participates in activities that clean, organize and prepare all areas of the Main Operating Room. In addition, but not limited to, this position facilitates transport of supply items, instruments, and equipment. The employee in this role will transport patients, transport specimens, transport deceased patients, and under direct supervision of a registered nurse, may assist with other patient care activities. This position is also responsible for maintaining and organizing supply items, instruments, and equipment, properly handle clean and infectious waste, distribute sterile supplies, instruments and equipment, clean and test autoclaves for proficiency, document properly in various logs, and provide other general duties pertinent to the department's needs.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.

  • Experience in a hospital, procedural or operating room setting.

  • Using principles of case containment, cleans, organizes and prepares operating room suits after each surgical procedure.

  • Maintains organization and cleanliness of Pod Cores, corridors, alcoves, sub-sterile rooms, utility rooms, storage rooms, and other functional areas of the operating room as needed or as directed by a supervisor, charge nurse or manager.

  • Provides for a safe environment by keeping all floors and walkways clean, dry and avoiding obstructions.

  • Return supplies, equipment and instruments not in use to the proper storage area or processing facility.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of infection control methods by using recommended cleaning agents for various infectious conditions.

  • Cleans, prepares, and organizes equipment storage areas and ensures equipment is ready for use.

  • Cleans, prepares and organizes patient transport beds and gurneys.

  • Cleans and maintains autoclaves according to manufacture specifications.

  • Recognizes additional Unit needs and provides service for meeting these needs, errands, ancillary duties, and tasks to maintain an effect patient care environment.

  • Identifies and safely transports patients to & from the operating room. Reports pertinent information to the nurse receiving patient.

  • Under the direct supervision of a registered nurse,

  • Aids with transferring, lifting and positioning patients for surgery.

  • Assists with surgical skin preps.

  • Delivers sterile items to the surgical field using principles of aseptic technique.

  • Implements established routines and teamwork while assigned to assist patient care in the clinical areas.

  • Assists with patient care by collating paperwork, stocking solutions, obtaining blood and blood products, obtaining supplies as needed, and other duties as assigned by the nurses and doctors caring for the patient.

  • Delivers specimens to designated labs including deceased patients to Morgue.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Six months (6) experience working in a hospital, procedure or operating room setting.

May be required to perform any of the following:

  • Repetitive tasks and lift/carry objects weighing up to 25lbs.

  • Be able to stand for approximately 4-5 hours/day.

  • Must complete mandatory training within 15 days of hire date.

  • A valid CA Driver's license may be required.

  • Participation in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Pull Notice System may be required.

  • Must be available to work variable shifts: days/hours (weekends, holidays, overtime, etc.) and float to other units/areas/buildings.

  • Perform tasks that require the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety protective clothing and gloves, fume hoods, glove boxes, wearing long pants, etc.

  • Personally responsible for following safety procedures and guidelines.

  • May work around loud noise, dust, tight confined areas, etc.

  • May work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present.

  • May work occasional overtime to meet operational deadlines.
