The Surgical Services Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the surgical department which includes; Same Day Surgery, GI Lab, CS, OR and PACU. This manager supervises the staff (RN, OR Tech, CST, HUC, CNA, Endo Tech). The manager ensures the highest level of patient care, patient experience and safety. The Manager of Surgical Services is responsible for planning, directing and evaluating the systems, operations and resources for the Surgical Services department functions of the organization in accordance with established strategic objectives.

Duties of the role:

  • Supervises staff, including hiring, evaluating, coaching, disciplining, terminating.

  • Oversees the overall functioning of the perioperative nursing areas.

  • Works collaboratively with the physician, charge nurse and other disciplines to promote quality, safe patient care.

  • Assesses the physical plant of the nursing areas to ensure a safe environment.

  • Determines the quality goals for the department in partnership with the Valley.

  • Ensures adequate resources are available for provision of quality patient care, including staff, equipment, facilities and supplies.

  • Reviews patient medical records for appropriate documentation per standards.

  • Supports the regulatory goals of the department and hospital.

  • Consults other departments to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient's care. (i.e. dietary, social services, physical medicine, respiratory therapy, quality/utilization management, facilities, financial, HIM.).

  • Leads the strategic planning for the department.

  • Prepare department budget with finance and the director, working to stay within budgetary parameters.

  • Serves as a liaison with our anesthesia providers.

  • Helps to ensure appropriate charges are applied to patient accounts.

  • Provides emotional and clinical support to staff, patients and their families.
  • Assigns and oversees orientation of new employees to the department.

  • Ensures staff meets all licensure and educational requirements.

  • Reviews and approves timecards for employees.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing, BSN or BAN required.
  • Minimum 5 years of recent clinical experience in Surgical Services including at least one year of leadership experience (i.e. management, supervisory, charge nurse, etc.)
  • Current Wisconsin Registered Nurse (RN) license required (or eligibility through reciprocity).
  • Current BLS certification required at time of hire/start date (must be through American Heart Association or American Red Cross).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree in relevant field preferred.
  • Prefer endoscopy experience.
