Job Description
ECU Department of Dental Medicine is seeking a motivated undergraduate student to assist with research focused on developing next-generation antibiofilm dental materials. This position provides hands-on research experience ideal for students interested in dentistry, biomaterials, biomedical research, or graduate/professional school.
Research Focus

Our lab develops antibiofilm dental materials using reverse-amide 2-aminoimidazole compounds to prevent secondary caries associated with:

  • Bonded resin composite restorations
  • Ceramic and metal restorations
  • Orthodontic resin cements
  • Sealants and resin infiltrants
  • Glass ionomer materials
  • Endodontic irrigants


We also study degradation of the aged hybrid layer in bonded restorations using advanced imaging and analytical techniques such as:

  • Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM)
  • Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM)
  • Confocal microscopy
  • nanoCT imaging
  • In situ zymography

The undergraduate assistant will support multiple ongoing projects and gain exposure to modern dental biomaterials research.
Responsibilities


  • Assist with preparation and testing of dental material specimens
  • Support laboratory experiments and data collection
  • Help with microscopy sample preparation and imaging
  • Conduct literature searches and summarize findings
  • Maintain organized lab notebooks and research records
  • Participate in lab meetings and assist graduate students and faculty

Preferred (Majors, Experience, GPA, etc.)
Required Qualifications


  • Sophomore or Junior undergraduate student
  • Major in Biology, Chemistry, Biomedical Engineering, or Pre-Dentistry
  • Minimum GPA: 3.5
  • Strong attention to detail and reliability
  • Ability to commit to 8 hours per week during summer and fall semesters
