SUMMARY:

The Manager of Phlebotomy will report to the Director of Laboratory Operations. The Manager of Phlebotomy is responsible for the daily operations, staffing, quality oversight, and performance management of phlebotomy services across assigned locations. This role ensures safe, efficient, and compliant specimen collection services while supporting patient experience, staff development, and organizational goals. The Manager collaborates closely with laboratory leadership, nursing, and clinical teams to ensure timely and accurate specimen collection.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Oversee daily phlebotomy operations across inpatient, outpatient, and/or ambulatory settings.

Interviews, hires, schedules, trains, assigns work, evaluates, and when necessary, provides for discipline and discharge of employees within area of responsibility.

Provides guidance and counsel as necessary to resolve sensitive/complex employee relations matters

Ensure appropriate staffing coverage, scheduling, and productivity to meet service demands.

Monitor workflow efficiency, turnaround times, and service quality and implement improvements.

Recruit, train, coach, and evaluate phlebotomy staff and supervisors.

Ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditationn standards (e.g., CLIA, CAP, The Joint Commission, OSHA).

May assist in instruction of students and residents and in the orientation of new employees.

Maintain quality metrics related to specimen integrity and collection accuracy.

Participate in budgeting, labor management, and operational reporting.

Serve as a liaison between Laboratory Services, nursing, and clinical departments.

Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION:

Associate's degree required; Bachelor's degree preferred in a related field.

Current phlebotomy or Med Lab Science certification (ASCP, AMT, NHA, or equivalent). Certification in phlebotomy is desired but specialized knowledge can also be obtained through equivalent work experience.

EXPERIENCE:

Minimum of 5 years of progressive phlebotomy, administrative or clinical laboratory experience, including 2+ years in leadership.

Strong knowledge of phlebotomy practices, specimen handling, and laboratory workflows.

Experience managing phlebotomy operations in a hospital or large healthcare system.

Experience in a unionized environment.

Performance improvement or Lean/Six Sigma experience.

Strong leadership and people-management skills.

Excellent communication and organization abilities.

Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Proficiency with laboratory information systems and standard office software.

PHYSICAL & WORK REQUIREMENTS

Ability to work in patient care environments, including standing and walking for extended periods. May require flexible scheduling, including early mornings, weekends, or limited on-call support, based on operational needs.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

The Manager of Phlebotomy has supervisory responsibility for phlebotomy staff and supervisors across assigned locations.

Pay Range:

$71,136.00-$117,353.60
