About The Role

First Bank of Montana is hiring an Intern to be a part of our team during the summer of 2026. The position will be located in our Choteau, Montana location. Are you pursuing a degree in Finance or Accounting and have a desire to learn about a career in the banking field? If so, this is the opportunity for you! This position involves providing support for our lending staff and requires a positive attitude and great customer service skills. The ability to work in a team atmosphere and promote the bank's products and services is required. Professionalism, confidentiality, good attendance, punctuality, flexibility and adaptability are a must!

The internship will run for 12 weeks, with start and end dates to be determined by the successful candidate and bank management. Expected work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8 am - 5 pm. Flexibility of working hours and dates will be available, depending on business needs.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will have extensive contact with bank staff as well as with external customers.. He/She will be expected to conduct him/herself in a manner that will enhance the overall efficiency and image of the bank. It will be required to build and maintain rapport with co-workers in order to complete tasks in a timely manner while following all policy and regulatory requirements.

Must comply with applicable laws and regulations, including but not limited to, the Dodd-Frank Act, the Bank Secrecy Act, the Patriot Act, and the Office of Foreign Assets Control. Must complete the assigned online training courses and achieve a score of 85% or greater by due date.

Intern Essential Job Functions:

  • Input financial statement data into company software and analyze to determine credit worthiness of client.
  • Prepare cash flow worksheets to demonstrate borrower's ability to repay loans.
  • Gain exposure to the loan approval process by completing credit authorization worksheets. Input data, build tables, and borrowers relationships into presentation.
  • Develop a working knowledge of loan policy and gain the ability to communicate its interpretation to loan committee.
  • Research regulations and compliance related to bank policy and procedures.
  • Scan credit file documents, then review the documents ensuring the image quality and file is complete.
  • Contribute to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed, including special projects as assigned.
  • Shadow Commercial/Ag Lender and Deposit Officer during the sales call process with prospective clients.
  • Gain exposure to all departments in the bank including deposits, operations, compliance and marketing.

Other Job Functions:

  • Perform job functions in compliance with all company policies and procedures, federal and state rules and regulations as applicable to the position, including, but not limited to BSA/AML, OFAC and GLBA/privacy rules.
  • Keep management appropriately informed of area activities and of any significant problems.
  • Participate in community service and bank sponsored activities that serve and support the mission and values of First Bank of Montana.
  • Provide superior internal and external customer service: must demonstrate self-governance, courtesy, and respect toward external customers as well as internal customers (all organization personnel).
  • Represent First Bank of Montana in a professional manner which includes a professional image, confidentiality, a positive "can-do" attitude, good attendance, punctuality, flexibility and adaptability in meeting bank and customer needs. Keep work area tidy and maintain customer privacy. Attend and participate in meetings as required.
  • Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of this job in order to accomplish, among other things, in-person contact with customers and lenders.

About You

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Currently pursuing a degree in Finance or Accounting
  • Desire to pursue a career in community banking

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, ABILITY:

  • Ability to work quickly and accurately
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft applications such as Word, Excel, Outlook, etc. and the ability to learn new systems/applications
  • High degree of reliability and dependability used to follow through and meet deadlines and commitments in a timely manner
  • Ability to understand financial analysis (i.e. financial statements, tax returns, and business plans)
  • Ability to have a broad knowledge of banking regulations

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Must be able to routinely perform work indoors in climate-controlled shared work area with minimal noise level.

Must be able to work extended hours or travel off site whenever required or requested by management. Must be capable of regular, reliable and timely attendance. Must be capable of climbing / descending stairs in an emergency situation.

Specific lifting abilities required by this job include: Light work. The employee is constantly required to stand and walk. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include: The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and/or operation/inspection of machines and/or using measurement devices at distances close to the eyes.

Must be capable of occasional travel (less than 10 days per year) by automobile (as driver and passenger), commercial airlines, rental vehicles and public transportation and be able to lodge in public facilities.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS: Starting salary is dependent upon relevant experience and may vary based on the geographic location of the position.
