Description

This position is responsible for assisting with the logistics, safety and the overall program experience of selected Adventure WV programs and operations. The Program Assist will train student staff to ensure they are informed of all safety guidelines and ensure they are adhered to by all persons on the trip. The Program Assistant will also facilitate participant instruction, guide participant supervision. The Assistant will use the Outdoor Rec Center to guide activities that are specific to explicit goals of the group. Assists will also assist with facility operations on an as-needed basis. These individuals must be well organized, compassionate, and thorough communicators when it comes to teaching and guiding others.

The Adventure WV Climbing Site Managers work to support outdoor climbing operations for Adventure WV. This includes facilitating climbing experiences for First Year Trips, ORC climbing trips, internal WVU groups, external groups, and Welcome Week.

During the summer site managers can also expect to assist with climbing wall operations at the student rec center through special events and youth programming.

Site managers will develop/practice a wide range of skills, including technical climbing systems, leadership, collaboration, and education. More specifically, Climbing Site Managers will manage all aspects of the First-Year Trips climbing activities at Coopers Rock State Forest, Climbing Wall special events, and other potential climbing recreation trips and events.

What you'll do

  • Safety and Supervision: Assists with the safety of self, staff, and participants. Work will include the proper set up and take down of program facilities as well as inspecting equipment and property and documenting these inspections. Must be able to instruct participants on proper use of equipment and structures. Must supervise the programming and safety of participants. Uses good judgment while making independent decisions regarding all facets of the safe and effective use of the course. Understand and be able to assist with the implementation of the Adventure WV Emergency Action Plan, when necessary.
  • Program Delivery and Planning: An Assistant is responsible for understanding their specific role with program delivery and assisting the designated Program Manager with all delegated program logistics, delivery, and operations. This includes, but isn't limited to, attending pre-program meetings, safety briefings, pre-program inspections and completing assigned facility operational tasks. Must be able to work with others and adhere to outlined standard and local operating procedures. Must be able to deal calmly with stressful situations and people.
  • Physical: Trips take place in an outdoor, adventure orientated setting. Therefore, Assistants should have the ability to perform their required duties for extended periods of time while exposed to adverse conditions including, but not limited to, rough terrain, precipitation, temperature extremes, and wind. Must be able to stand for extended periods of time and be able to lift and carry 35 pounds for extended periods of time.

Pay Grade: 10

Length of Assignment: 1.5 months

Work Hours: 30 hours per week

Qualifications
  • Associate's degree
  • 0-6 months of related experience. Assistant, however, must be fully trained on Adventure WV local operating procedures and successfully complete and pass a recognized training program prior to employment
  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment
Requirements
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Current CPR and First Aid Certifications
    • Certification can be obtained through Adventure WV prior to or after hiring date
