What to Expect
Tesla is seeking a Senior Counsel, Energy Products to join our legal team in either Austin, TX, or Bay Area, CA, with a strong preference for Austin, TX. Reporting to the Associate General Counsel, Energy Products, this role will focus on commercial matters supporting Tesla's global residential, commercial, industrial, and utility-scale solar, energy storage, and Supercharger businesses. The ideal candidate will bring extensive experience from a big-firm background in renewable energy, with expertise in equipment sales, service agreements, commodity trading, purchase agreements, utility contracts, project development, construction, and finance deals. This position offers a unique opportunity for a proactive and entrepreneurial lawyer to contribute to Tesla's mission of accelerating the world's transition to sustainable energy in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
What You'll Do
- Provide advice on strategic regulatory and transactional matters for the Energy Products business worldwide, covering commercial, utility, and consumer issues
- Structure and negotiate sales, service, project finance, and development transactions, including equipment supply, construction, maintenance, lease, power purchase, and warranty agreements
- Support creative financing transactions and the development of Tesla-owned generation and storage projects
- Advise on the sale, installation, and maintenance of Tesla products such as Powerwall, Megapack, Megablock, Solar, Supercharger, and Semi
- Guide new market entry, product launches, and regulatory compliance for Energy Products globally
- Collaborate with colleagues to ensure consistency in contracts and risk allocation across the global commercial business
- Assist in energy-related commodity trading and support business growth at scale worldwide
What You'll Bring
- Excellent academic credentials, preferably with a JD from a top-ranked law school, and a current license to practice in one or more US jurisdictions
- Minimum of 10 years of practice experience at a well-regarded law firm or comparable in-house experience at a company in the energy industry
- Experience structuring and negotiating complex, financeable transactions in the energy sector, with a preference for renewable energy expertise
- Familiarity with trading norms and regulations as an added advantage
- Ability to proactively identify issues, drive projects, make cost/benefit assessments, and propose pragmatic legal and business solutions
- Capability to work autonomously and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment while managing competing priorities
- Strong interpersonal skills to build confidence and communicate effectively across all organizational levels
