Idaho National Laboratory is hiring an Area Manager to work on our Protective Force team. Our team works a varied schedule depending on where they are assigned.

Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is seeking a Protective Force Area Manager to join the Protective Force Services Team. This role is at the heart of America's nuclear security mission, where every decision directly shapes the safety, security, and operational excellence of our most critical facilities. As a first or second level Area Manager, you will report to the Protective Force (PF) Operations Department Manager and lead PF personnel across company-operated facilities.

You will supervise a Major, Shift Captains, and Lieutenants while driving policy development, operational planning, and administrative oversight. You will interface with ES&H to ensure compliance with all safety requirements, oversee training and certification programs, and perform self-assessments to identify and correct findings. Additional responsibilities include contributing to the PF budget and Site Security Plan (SSP), partnering directly with union leadership, and ensuring strict compliance with the collective bargaining agreement.

This position serves as the PF point of contact for all Plan-of-the-Day activities for the assigned area and leads the development of the area Self-Assessment program in accordance with DOE orders, Safeguards and Security and PF Procedures, and INL requirements.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Manage a broad functional area through non-exempt and exempt specialists, providing direction in accordance with established policies and management guidance. Supervise a Major, Shift Captains, and Lieutenants, and may manage more than one shift, department, or subordinate managers.
  • Train, develop, and motivate staff to meet unit targets and goals. Interview and select subordinates, conduct performance appraisals, and build action plans to support professional growth. Recommend personnel actions, including termination, when necessary.
  • Develop and administer budgets, schedules, and performance standards for the organizational unit. Provide budget input for direct accounts including long-range planning for staffing, equipment, and capital needs. Take actions to manage costs within the section.
  • Receive assignments based on incremental objectives and defined processes. Monitor, integrate, and coordinate daily, weekly, and monthly operations - including scheduling, staffing, emergency response, training, equipment, and logistical support across PF facilities.
  • Develop operational enhancements and maintain internal controls, schedule adherence, and quality standards. Manage routine operational plans while also helping to shape the department's overall and long-term goals.
  • Develop policy and procedures meeting company, DOE, and NRC requirements. Provide technical expertise and guidance to on-shift supervisors and ensure proper interpretation of standards and professional practices across the workforce. Interface with other departments and directorates to maintain a strong company safeguards and security posture.
  • Ensure quality, recordkeeping, and compliance across all PF operations. Conduct periodic safety and operational walk-downs of facilities, report and track corrective actions, and ensure all injuries are fully investigated with OSHA and DOE guidelines accurately applied.
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve escalated problems of moderate to large scope. Analyze trends, identify root causes, and develop corrective recommendations in response to accidents, incidents, and occurrences.
  • Support the S&S Self-Assessment program by identifying required and additional assessments in accordance with DOE orders, S&S and PF Procedures, and INL requirements. Recommend changes to sub-unit, unit, or discipline policies as appropriate.
  • Work with subordinate supervisors, functional peer groups, and DOE and regulatory agency representatives - including Local Law Enforcement Agencies (LLEA). Gain cooperation of others through presentations of technical information and serve as a security interface between local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies as assigned.

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree plus 5 years of direct experience in directing or supporting ProForce or similar operations; or
  • 13 years of equivalent experience, including 8 years of law enforcement or military experience and 5 years of direct experience in directing or supporting ProForce or similar operations
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance, which requires US citizenship
  • DOE SPO II Certification required

Preferred:

  • Working knowledge of DOE and NRC orders and requirements
  • Working knowledge of the Conduct of Operations
  • Working knowledge of the Integrated Safety Management System (ISMS)
  • Working knowledge of the Conduct of Maintenance

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, and work in an office and field/laboratory environment. The job requires hand/finger dexterity to keyboard or type, handle materials, manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms. The job requires operation of job-related equipment and driving a vehicle. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds. Sufficient visual acuity and hearing capacity to perform the essential functions and interact with people is required. Job Information:

  • The target pay range for this position is $159,516 - $225,180 annually. The full pay range is $93,840 - $225,180. At Idaho National Laboratory, compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
  • TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment.
