Overview:

Oak Ridge National Laboratoryis the largest U.S. Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.

We are seeking a Target Operations Shift Technician (OST) who will serve as a member of the Target Operations Team at theSpallation Neutron Source(SNS). As an OST youare responsible forsafe, efficient, and reliable operation of the Spallation Target and support systems within prescribed requirements. You will haveadditionalresponsibilities in the role of Systems Expert for assigned systems.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Monitor and test Target systems equipment,maintainlogs and completeappropriate paperwork.

  • Diagnose Target systems statuses andinitiatecorrective action based on available information.

  • Trend, analyze and interpret operational data to provide input for Target systems performance reports.

  • Use of Target operations procedures to implementappropriate actionsunder normal, abnormal, outage and emergency conditions.

  • Obtain andmaintainqualification as Target Operations Shift Technician through bi-annual recertification.

  • Read and interpret schematics, P&ID's, and system drawings.

  • Comply withenvironmental, safety, health, and quality program requirements.

  • Oversee installation, testing and commissioning of new systems and components.

  • Develop a high-level knowledge for designated systems and serve as the System Expert.

  • Develop andmaintainsystem training modules, and operating procedures to reflect system changes or updates.

  • Coordinate with System Engineers tooptimizeequipment upgrades and system performance.

  • Revise and update operating procedures, alarm responseproceduresand training modules.

Basic Qualifications:

  • An associate degree in mechanical, nuclear, process technology or a related discipline and minimum of 5 years of relevant experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered (HS diploma with at least 7 years of relevant experience or BS degree with at least 3 years of relevant experience).

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working in a nuclear or radiological facility.

  • Experience with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and related software.

  • Must be able to work rotating shift work (facilityoperates24/7).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Accelerator Target or Nuclear Operations experience.

  • U.S. Navy Nuclear Training.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and toparticipatecreatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.

  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities toaccomplishmultiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.

Special Requirements:

  • Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will berequiredafter offer.

  • Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Security, Credentialing, and Eligibility Requirements:

For employment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), a Real ID compliant form of identification will be required. Additionally, ORNL is subject to Department of Energy (DOE) access restrictions. All employees must also be able to obtain and maintain a federal Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card as mandated by Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, which requires a favorable post-employment background investigation.

To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.

For foreign national candidates:

If you have not resided in the U.S. for three consecutive years, you are not eligible for the PIV credential and instead will need to obtain a favorable Local Site Specific Only (LSSO) risk determination to maintain employment. Once you meet the three-year residency requirement, you will be required to obtain a PIV credential to maintain employment.
