Position Summary:
The Commercial Special Assets Officer is responsible for managing and resolving problematic and nonperforming commercial loans.
This position is exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act and is not eligible for overtime pay.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Skills:
GED or High School diploma
15+ years of related experience in commercial debt restructuring and negotiation strategies
Solid understanding of commercial loan collection policies and procedures
Strong knowledge of bankruptcy laws, foreclosure, and state and federal laws concerning loan collection and debt settlement
Strong self-confidence, firmness, negotiating, and persuasive skills when dealing with clients
Ability to engage and communicate effectively with individuals across a broad spectrum of backgrounds
Ability to read and understand financial statements and tax returns
Act as a consultant to commercial clients to enhance the company's profitability
Excellent communication skills both verbally and in writing to senior management and clients
Reliable transportation necessary for occasional fieldwork
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite to include Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Skills:
Bachelor's degree in business administration, finance, accounting, or related field
20+ years of commercial loan experience understanding how commercials loan are structured and made
Previous experience as a commercial lender
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Negotiate with lending personnel and commercial borrowers to restructure problem loans for the Bank's Commercial clients
Engage in the loan workout process associated with larger commercial loans to enhance the likelihood of performance and/or reduce the likelihood of loss
Review Business Banking's charge-offs to aid in maximizing loan payment recoveries
Participate in the financial institution's development of collection policies and procedures for handling delinquent loans and default procedures
Ensure that loan collection policies and procedures are complied with
Contact delinquent account holders through telephone calls, letters, emails, and in-person visits
Direct foreclosure of delinquent accounts determined to be irresolvable, ensuring that all proper documentation is present
Coordinate with legal counsel regarding collection effort and work with other departments within the financial institution regarding litigation and foreclosure activities
Make recommendations to legal counsel and set legal strategy to limit legal fees to the bank
Provide guidance to lending personnel on effective communication strategies with past due loan clients, emphasizing language that mitigates legal risk

Comply with regulatory rules and regulations evidenced through successful completion of training and demonstrated ability
Perform other duties and/or special projects as appointed by management
