The Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) Specialist supports the M&D Reliability team by serving as a technical expert in condition monitoring and predictive maintenance technologies. This role works closely with stations and regional teams in the Midwest to diagnose equipment health, resolve complex reliability issues, and advance CBM program maturity across the fleet. The CBM Specialist provides subject matter expertise in vibration analysis, lubrication, oil analysis, thermography, ultrasound, motor testing, and balancing, while mentoring others, supporting enterprise CBM tools, and driving consistent, high-quality application of reliability best practices.

Lead Engineering Technologists provide technical expertise to solve complex problems and utilize the leadership skills necessary tooversee the training and development of the hierarchy. Incumbents engage in strategic oversight and management of work in a specific area of expertise, with minimal supervision. Incumbents are expected to have advanced skills and have the ability to work independently.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the Midwest regional CBM technical expert, supporting site and regional analysts in diagnosing persistent or complex equipment issues identified through condition monitoring.

  • Apply and interpret CBM technologies including vibration analysis, oil analysis, thermography, ultrasound, motor testing, and motion amplification to assess rotating and electrical equipment health.

  • Support and administer enterprise CBM systems and tools (e.g., InsightCM, AMS Machinery Manager, PlantView, PRiSM, PI), including asset setup, data validation, troubleshooting, and user mentoring.

  • Participate in and support root cause analysis (RCA), apparent cause analysis (ACA), and other reliability investigations.

  • Perform and support field activities such as equipment balancing, shaft alignment, and CBM verification of new installations.

  • Act as a subject matter expert for lubrication and oil analysis programs, including standards, chemical reviews, and program improvement.

  • Develop, maintain, and utilize technical documentation, procedures, reports, and analytical tools (including advanced Excel workbooks) to support diagnostics and decision-making.

  • Share lessons learned and best practices across regions and teams to improve fleet-wide reliability performance.

  • Assist in planning, organizing, and prioritizing work to support business goals, including travel to operating sites as required.

  • Demonstrate strong communication, collaboration, and leadership behaviors while mentoring CBM analysts and site personnel.

Basic / Required Qualifications
  • Associate's degree in engineering technology

  • 8 years of related work experience

  • In Lieu of degree and 8 years of related work experience, HS Diploma / GED and 10 years of related work experience

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Vibration Analysis Category IV

  • Oil Analysis, MLA III

  • Thermography Level II]

  • RDI Motion Amplification Certificate

  • Experienced in field balancing: Motors, Fans, Single-Plane, 2-plane, 2-plane static/couple

  • Working knowledge of InsightCM, PlantView, PRiSM & PI

  • Working knowledge of Coal and Combined Cycle Generating station systems and components.

  • Working knowledge of industrial electrical systems and low voltage electronics troubleshooting including reading electrical drawings and using a multimeter with unique familiarity utilizing Electrical Testing technologies, e.g., EMI, on and off-line motor testing such as ESA or MCSA, partial discharge analysis, etc.

  • Working knowledge of Networks and Network Troubleshooting

  • InsightCM (aka "Smart Gen") Hardware/Software configuration and troubleshooting experience

  • Advanced skills with Microsoft Office software

Working Conditions

  • Mobility Classification - Field

    • Highly mobile in their day-to-day work; may be based out of a facility but do not need an assigned workspace; infrequently use shared seating or collaboration space

    • Dispatched to perform work from and in various field locations

  • Work in office and power plant environment

  • Non-routine weekend and evening work

  • Travel to Stations and occasion off-system travel

  • Travel 20-40%.

  • Work schedule is flexible

Specific Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

  • Good written and oral communication skills.

  • Either 6+ years of relevant industry experience coupled with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Engineering Technology, or 8+ years of experience and Associate Degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology, or 10+ years equivalent experience without a degree
