JOB OVERVIEW:

The Corporate Manager, Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) is a strategic and hands-on leader responsible for leading the team to build and sustain a culture of safety excellence and environmental compliance across Blue Diamond's manufacturing facilities and supply chain operations.

This role serves as the technical subject matter expert (SME) for safety and environmental programs, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations (including California-specific requirements), while partnering with Operations to embed practical, sustainable solutions that protect people, the environment, and Blue Diamond Growers' business.

The ideal candidate combines deep technical expertise with strong influencing and facilitation skills, enabling them to translate regulatory requirements into actionable behaviors

RESPONSIBILITIES:

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Safety Leadership and Oversight (40%)

  • Champion a "safety-first" culture across all sites, reinforcing that Operations owns safety, EH&S enables and verifies
  • Partner with the site EHS leaders to drive continuous improvement in key safety metrics (TRIR, DART, near-miss reporting, good catches, risk assessments) and program management
    • Facilitate incident investigations using a structured, fact-based root cause methodology
    • First aid and injury management with 3rd party (ATI)
    • Complete OSHA 300 Logs annually at year end
    • OSHA Compliant reporting
    • Provide guidance and oversight to ATI, as needed
    • American Red Cross Admin for all BDG CPR Trainers
  • Assure Corporate Health and Safety standards are reviewed annually, updated and rolled out, as needed.
  • Lead internal audits and support external regulatory inspections, as needed
  • Interpret and apply Safety regulations including OSHA, Cal/OSHA, and any other local regulations
  • Conduct EHS risk assessments annually (minimum) and develop mitigation plans for top risks
  • Develop and maintain EHS dashboard with leading and lagging indicators
  • Provide Safety oversight for the Sacramento plant
  • Support response to significant safety and environmental incidents, ensure timely reporting and partner with legal, HR, and operations, as needed
  • Hearing conservation program management
    • Standard threshold shift follow-up
    • Ensure sites schedule annual hearing testing and adhere to the program requirements

Environmental Compliance & Sustainability (30%)

  • Serve as the corporate SME for environmental compliance, including:
    • Air permits (e.g., Title V where applicable)
    • Wastewater and stormwater programs
    • Hazardous waste management (RCRA)
    • California-specific regulations (e.g., CARB, CalEPA, local air districts)
  • Ensure all sites maintain compliance with permits, reporting, and regulatory inspections
  • Partner with operations to reduce environmental impact and support sustainability initiatives

Workers' Compensation (15%)

  • Partner with 3rd party agencies (ATI, Travelers, Gallagher-Basset, AON) and site leadership to manage workers compensation claims, as needed.
  • Maintain relationship with Occupational Health clinics to ensure claims are managed effectively.

DOT Safety Compliance (15%)

  • Manage Blue Diamonds compliance to Dept of Transportation regulations. Assure drivers and equipment meets requirements

Location: Sacramento, CA (or Remote with Travel)

Reports To: Sr. Director, FSQA & EHS

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental health & safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or related field
  • 8-12+ years of progressive EH&S experience in manufacturing, food, agriculture, or industrial environments
  • Demonstrated expertise in both:
    • Safety systems and behavior-based safety
    • Environmental compliance and permitting

Technical Expertise

* Strong working knowledge of:

  • OSHA / Cal-OSHA regulations
  • EPA and California environmental regulations
  • Industrial safety programs (LOTO, confined space, machine guarding, etc.)
  • Experience managing multi-site EH&S programs
  • Certifications preferred (e.g., CSP, CIH, CHMM)

Leadership & Skills

  • Proven ability to influence without authority across operations and leadership teams
  • Strong facilitator capable of leading cross-functional problem-solving
  • Ability to translate complex regulations into practical, executable actions
  • Data-driven mindset with strong analytical and root cause analysis skills
  • Excellent communication and training capabilities
