DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position supports the development and delivery of recreation and wellness programs for inmates at the State Correctional Institution (SCI) Waymart. The role promotes constructive use of time and encourages skill building. As a Corrections Activities Specialist, you will perform the following duties:

  • Program Planning: Develop a wide range of structured activities for inmates including sports, wellness, decision making, and group programs
  • Instruction and Guidance: Provide coaching, instruction, and leadership during activities and explain expectations and requirements for participation
  • Program Evaluation: Assess inmate interests, evaluate the success of activities, and assist in setting goals and budgets for future programming
  • Record Management: Prepare reports and maintain all activity records in line with departmental policies and regulatory standards
  • Equipment Oversight: Supervise the use, storage, and upkeep of all recreation equipment and coordinate requests for needed supplies

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment, 40 hours per week
  • Work hours are 12:00 PM to 8:30 PM, Tuesday - Saturday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • This position is eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $67,766.00 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • A bachelor's degree with major course work in recreation and physical education; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within three months of graduating with a qualifying degree.

Other Requirements:

  • Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

  • You must pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements.
