Job Summary

Provides direct supervision typically to professionals or skilled technical employees. Functions as advisor to unit and administration. Analyzes and resolves problems, interprets policies (e.g., fiscal management, HR, contracts and grants, resource management in defined areas) and demonstrates solid subject matter knowledge. Exercises judgment within defined procedures and policies to determine appropriate action. Supervises staff to assure accountability and stewardship of department resources (operational, financial, and human) in compliance with departmental goals and objectives. Supervises licensed clinicians and /or counselors providing counseling and assessment services, crisis intervention, individual and group therapy and / or testing. Assists in ensuring quality of treatment delivery. Assists with administration and management of personnel, fiscal, and material resources.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Active certification through the California Consortium of Addiction Programs and Professionals (CCAPP) or the California Association for Drug/Alcohol Educators (CAADE) is required. Acceptable certifications include: RADT, CADC-CAS, CADC-I, CADC-II, or CADC-III, CATC I, CATC II, CATC III or CADTP SUDRC, SUDCC I, II, III, IV. Maintain current certification, in good standing, with CCAPP or CAADE to maintain employment with UC Davis Health.
  • Advanced degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • 5+ years of recent experience in AOD in a health care facility or residential treatment facility.
  • Experience in counseling, social work, or other related fields.
  • Experience with evidence-based substance use disorder treatment models and an understanding of treatment modalities is expected.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of behavioral health counseling methods and techniques, crisis intervention, treatment planning and case management.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills: verbal, written and listening to convey instructions, directions and information appropriately and accurately.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable federal, state and local laws, rules and regulations.
  • Demonstrated supervisory skills to guide behavioral health providers on treatment methods.
  • Demonstrated active listening, persuasion and counseling skills.
  • Working knowledge of human resources management practices and policies.
  • Knowledge of business software, specialized applications and HER systems used in behavioral health centers / clinics.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and meet deadlines in a complex, challenging environment.
  • Ability to organize operations in an efficient and effective manner.
  • Ability to work diplomatically with a wide variety of people and as a team member.
  • Ability to work well as part of a multidisciplinary clinical team and demonstrate respectful and collaborative communication.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully and respectfully manage conflict.
  • Ability to implement policies, procedures and directives from management that may differ from personal conviction.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • Demonstrates accountability and professionalism.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Valid California Driver License
  • Licensed in a psychiatric behavioral health discipline preferred.
  • Proficiency in Spanish, as well as English, is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of community resources and services is preferred.

Department Overview

This position has administrative responsibility for the Substance Abuse Navigator (SUN) Program-Treating substance use disorders in Emergency Departments.

The Department of Clinical Social Services provides comprehensive clinical social services to patients and their families at UC Davis Medical Center. The Substance Use Navigator (SUN) is responsible and accountable for providing substance use disorder assessments, treatment planning, psychoeducation, counseling and intensive care coordination to patients at UC Davis Medical Center. As a member of the Substance Use Intervention Team (SUIT), the SUN coordinates with physicians, psychiatrists, and social workers to develop and implement treatment plans to ensure successful linkages to community providers. Critical aspects of this position involve the screening, interviewing and assessment of patients suffering from substance use and co-occurring disorders.
