National Grid is hiring a Principal QC Electrical Engineer in the Substation Engineering & Design department in Syracuse, NY. This is a Hybrid position and will be in office 2 to 3 times a week.

The NY Substation Engineering & Design department is committed to delivering on our promises and producing the highest quality substation designs. In this role you will improve the design quality, ensure consistent implementation of standard designs, and play a key role in developing & mentoring our team members

Job Purpose

Provide independent, thorough quality checks of substation drawings and associated deliverables to support substation capital improvement and construction projects. Assist in the development and continuous improvement of engineering standard documents and standard design templates, provide on-site field support when required, and deliver training, mentorship, and professional development for electrical designers and engineers. Collaborate with multi-discipline engineering and design teams to meet project milestones for work ranging from upgrades to existing substations to new greenfield builds. Substations range from large transmission facilities to small distribution substations up to and including 345kV.

Key Accountabilities
  • Perform independent substation drawing quality checks to support substation construction projects.
  • Provide technical guidance, 1 on 1 support, and mentorship & coaching to electrical designers & engineers.
  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary groups including but not limited to, Options Solution Engineering, Protection Engineering, Controls & Integration Engineering, Intelligent Substation Design & Standards, and Substation Engineering & Design.
  • Develop & lead technical training for electrical designers & engineers.
  • Review engineering calculations and studies (grounding, AC & DC system sizing, lightning protection, lighting, rigid bus design, etc.) to support projects.
  • Assist the Intelligent Substation Design & Standards department in the development and continuous improvement of substation standard designs & templates and standard engineering documents.
  • Prepare comprehensive written and oral reports of technical challenges, investigative findings, and recommended solutions.
  • Support field operations and engineering teams during construction and emergent issues as needed.
Qualifications

Required:

  • Minimum 20 years' experience related to electrical substation design, with consideration of a combination of lesser years and post graduate education credentials.
  • Or minimum 14 years' work experience related to electrical substation design with professional engineering license.
  • A Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited engineering program is required.
  • Must have a valid driver's license with acceptable driving history.
  • Coursework related to three-phase AC power, transformers, and electrical machines.
  • Expert knowledge on industry standards and codes (IEEE, NESC, NEC, etc.)
  • Excellent oral & written communication skills including the ability to teach others and communicate effectively both internally & externally to the department.
  • Proficient MS Office computer skills (Access, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, etc.).
  • Ability to physically navigate in and around an electrical substation.

Preferred:

  • A Master of Science or Engineering in Electrical Engineering and / or a PE License is preferred.
  • Knowledge in Bentley Microstation and ProjectWise.

Salary

$154,000 - $181,000 a year
