Job Purpose

This position provides deep and wide technical expertise to the Protection Operations team based on their hands-on experience within the related technologies. This individual is clearly seen by peers and clients as the subject matter expert in this area. This employee will apply the principles of system engineering at the conception, design and operation phases of project-grade construction, and any projects or groups of construction as the need arises including but not limited to planning and execution of major power system upgrades. This employee will work closely with engineers, project managers, Transmission Control Center, Regional Control Centers, Transmission Line Services, Overhead Line, planners, customer-facing groups, and support staff to assist and coordinate project construction throughout UNY. This employee would work in one of National Grid's field locations to support projects in UNY.

Key Accountabilities
  • Broad knowledge of all infrastructure technologies, with comprehensive technical knowledge and hands-on experience with the most complex protection schemes/ projects.
  • Understanding of rules and regulations that govern the use of technology, such as NERC.
  • Ability to define and articulate the "big picture" long-term vision for the department's operations and develop short term plans to help achieve it
  • Ability to assist in the design / engineering of solutions to maximize reliability and dependability while minimizing operational cost
  • Ability to prepare punch lists, as-builts and work closeout documentation
  • Ability to influence technical teams and to assist as needed to provide one-lines, prints, configurations, specifications, material requirements, sourcing/selection of vendors and to process this information in work management, procurement and accounting systems
  • Ability to work to both internal and external budget and schedule constraints
  • Ability to provide timely and accurate reporting on project status, barriers and timelines
  • Be a technical subject matter expert for Protection Operations in new projects and technology development and deployment
  • Work with Standards and Support to ensure proper documentation and field support
  • Ability to work off-hours and on-call and travel for projects assigned and/or system emergencies
  • Ability to identify and communicate best-practice across the service territory
  • Ability to assist in delivering Protection related technical training
  • Review conceptual and detailed designs to determine and develop constructability plans and sequences.
  • Assist in the development of outage plans for individual projects and major system upgrades.
  • Assist in the development of energization plans for individual projects and major system upgrades.
  • Provide interfacing support between multiple groups including engineering, transmission line, control centers and construction groups.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or Electronic Technology from an ABET accredited engineering school, or an Associate's Degree in Engineering or Electronic Technology is required.
  • 3 years (5+ years preferred) of experience in System Protection with a thorough knowledge of both theory and application is required.
  • Ability to develop technical/financial business case (e.g., sanction document) with moderate oversight and direction
  • Ability to effectively lead committees and teams, mentor and train personnel, and make presentations
  • Ability to deliver technology solutions in accordance with regulatory standards and methodologies
  • Comprehensive technical leadership skills recognizable by others
  • Actively builds and maintains a network of relationships, outside of normal business contacts
  • Effectively organize tasks, manage multiple priorities, identify the critical path, and deliver on commitments
  • Identifies and actively solicits stakeholder input through the engineering processes
  • Ability to articulate business drivers and how information technology can be applied to meet the requirements of the business
  • Assess impact and quantify risk to ensure appropriate business decisions are made
  • Ability to simplify complex subjects in a way that can be easily understood by less technical audiences
  • Recognition of cyber security threats and risks, and importance of protecting the infrastructure
  • Capacity to learn and apply new technologies and concepts
  • Superb diagnostic, troubleshooting, analysis and problem-solving skills
  • Curious and creative, always questioning, and never satisfied by the status quo
  • A high level of analytical skills and the ability to use creative problem-solving techniques in a team environment.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly and effectively.
More Information

Salary:
$145,000 - $165,000 per year
