Overview
We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to design, build, and operate high-throughput, low-latency, mission-critical platforms. This role focuses on Java-based API development, cloud-native deployments (GCP or equivalent), modern access management protocols, and AI-assisted software development.
You will own services with strict reliability, performance, and availability SLAs, operating at scale in a security-sensitive environment. Responsibilities:
Lead Solution in the development and delivery of the organization's software products to QA,UAT and Production.
Manage day-to-day activities and promote Agile software development practices within the team.
Collaborate with product owners and key stakeholders in Project Management, Business, QA, and Technology Operations to ensure timely and budget-friendly software project delivery.
Work with Scrum Master and product owner to provide development sizing and cost analysis estimates.
Collaborate with the product owner and team members in story decomposition, feature design, and task prioritization.
Utilize automated software testing tools and frameworks, including test-driven development, to meet software quality standards.
Support Single Sign-On (SSO) integration efforts to connect systems both internally and externally to Schwab.
Assist the release manager in assembling releases and improving the release process.
Help resolve needs and roadblocks identified by team members with the Scrum Master.
Ensure the coordination of individual team deliverables to achieve product releases.
Identify technology risks early and establish mitigation plans.
Conduct periodic reviews and code quality improvement sessions with onshore and offshore developers, focusing on requirements specification and design methodologies.
Prototype, validate, and create specific application solutions for business needs. Key Responsibilities
Core Engineering
* Design, develop, and maintain high-performance Java services supporting REST-based APIs.
* Build cloud-native, horizontally scalable services deployed on GCP and/or other public cloud platforms.
* Develop and secure APIs using OIDC, OAuth 2.0, and SAML-based authentication and authorization flows.
* Implement API-first designs with strong contract discipline, backward compatibility, and understandability. Scale, Performance & Reliability
* Build and operate highly resilient systems with:
o API latency SLA < 50ms
o Throughput > 5,000 TPS
o Availability 99.9%
o Error budget < 0.1%
* Design for fault tolerance, graceful degradation, and fast recovery.
* Apply resilience patterns such as timeouts, retries, circuit breakers, bulkheads, and rate limiting.
* Participate in production support, incident response, RCA, and continuous reliability improvement. Cloud & Deployment
* Use CI/CD pipelines for automated build, test, and deployment.
* Own build deploy run lifecycle, including monitoring, alerting, and capacity planning.
* Work with containerized workloads and modern deployment strategies (blue/green, canary, feature flags). AI-Enabled Development
* Actively use AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Copilot in agentic mode) to:
o Accelerate feature development
o Improve code quality and test coverage
o Assist with refactoring, documentation, and troubleshooting
* Champion responsible and effective AI usage as part of daily engineering workflows. Collaboration
* Partner with platform, security, SRE, and product teams to deliver end-to-end solutions.
* Contribute to architecture reviews, design discussions, and technical decision-making. Required Qualifications
* 8+ years Strong Java expertise with experience building production-grade services.
* 8+ years Hands-on API development experience, including RESTful services and API security.
* Cloud deployment experience on GCP and/or equivalent cloud platforms.
* 2+ Solid experience with Access Management protocols:
o OAuth 2.0
o OpenID Connect (OIDC)
o SAML
* Proven experience building and operating high-criticality systems with strict SLAs.
* Strong understanding of distributed systems, concurrency, and performance optimization and resiliency .
* Experience with observability (metrics, logs, traces) and production troubleshooting. MUST HAVE:
Proficiency in building server-side applications (API SME) using C# and .NET Technologies.
Solution design and implementation experience for high availability, High throughput, high scalability Application
Good understanding of the latest System Architecture and Development Standards and Guidelines.
Experience in providing guidance and direction to junior team members. Qualifications:
Provide hands-on development and mentoring for other members of the development team.
Create artifacts for each project, including Software Architecture documentation, Technical Use Cases, and Code Review Packages.
Hands-on experience with SAML and OAuth solutions (optional but preferred).
Strong experience in developing and managing REST and SOAP-based Web Service APIs in a transaction processing environment.
Thorough understanding of Agile software development methodologies, values, and procedures.
Desire and passion for producing usable and scalable software using advanced development technologies.
BS/BA/MS in Computer Science or equivalent discipline. Experience:
Minimum 8+ years of software development experience, with 5+ years of team leadership experience.
Expertise in object-oriented analysis, Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), design patterns, development, implementation, and maintenance.
Experience with online security for user authentication is a plus.
Must be self-motivated, creative, and efficient in proposing solutions to complex, time-critical problems.
BS or MS in computer science or related technical field
7+ years of hands-on application programming and/or test automation / framework experience in an Agile development environment.
Hands-on software development experience in Java17
A minimum of 3 experience leading delivery and adoption of technical innovation across teams.
familiarity with Agile/Lean development and testing practices, including Test Driven Development, Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery
Experience with MongoDB, Aerospike
Experience with Token Services, SAML, OAuth 2.0, PKCE and OIDC
Experience with Authentication such as Kerberos, cert based, Ping
Experience testing RESTful web using test automation frameworks. Ability to parse nested JSON/ XML. SOAP experience a plus.
Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure in a challenging environment.
Experience with source control and Agile Tools (Bitbucket, Jira, Zephyr, Bamboo, GIT)
Experience with Google Cloud
Experience working in CI/CD environment. (Bamboo) One should be able to create, change and execute job from scratch using 'git' as source.
Experience with troubleshooting Production issues through analysis of logs (Splunk), dashboards and metrics.
Experience with financial services or brokerage industry
