Pay Range: Actual pay may vary up or down depending on job-related factors which may include knowledge, skills, experience, and location. In addition, this position may be eligible for incentive compensation.

Job Summary

The Senior Director of Engineering is responsible for the technical strategy, execution, and operational excellence of a critical platform in our Video Relay Service (VRS). This role leads engineering teams that build, scale, and operate a mission critical, real time communications platform that supports multiple products and services across the company.

The Senior Director ensures the platform is highly reliable, secure, compliant, and extensible, enabling product teams to deliver customer value efficiently while meeting the demands of a regulated, always on service. This role requires strong technical judgment, deep experience with large scale distributed systems, and the ability to drive alignment across engineering, product, compliance, operations and exec stakeholders.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities



  • Provide senior technical and organizational leadership for a critical platform in Sorenson's Video Relay Service (VRS), supporting real time, high availability communication between Deaf and hearing users.
  • Lead engineering teams responsible for a large scale, distributed, real time platform, including call signaling, media handling, routing, and supporting services that operate 24x7 under strict reliability and regulatory expectations.
  • Own platform health and outcomes, including availability, latency, resilience, security, and compliance, with direct impact on live customer and interpreter experiences.
  • Guide architectural and technical decision making for systems built on SIP based communication, real time audio/video media, and cloud native distributed services, balancing innovation with operational stability.
  • Partner with Product, Operations, Compliance, and Security leaders to define and deliver platform roadmaps that support VRS priorities while enabling multiple downstream products and teams.
  • Establish and evolve engineering standards, development practices, and operational processes appropriate for a mission critical, regulated, always on platform.
  • Drive continuous improvement in platform reliability, observability, incident readiness, and recovery, informed by production data and operational feedback.
  • Ensure the platform supports regulated workflows, including emergency services, privacy, and data handling requirements, in close collaboration with Legal and Compliance partners.
  • Build, lead, and develop a high performing engineering organization, including senior managers and technical leaders, with a strong focus on talent growth and succession.
  • Communicate platform strategy, risks, tradeoffs, and progress clearly to executive leadership, contributing to company level decisions around VRS delivery and technology investment.
  • Represent the platform organization in cross company initiatives and external technical or vendor partnerships that affect VRS operations and future platform capabilities.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position manages employees and is responsible for the performance management and hiring of the employees.

Education

Minimum 4 Year / Bachelors Degree Computer science, Computer Engineering, or related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
