Stone Ridge is seeking an Upper School Assistant Head of School to begin in July 2026.
Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart, a member of the international Network of Sacred Heart Schools, is a Catholic, independent college preparatory school for girls, Grades 1-12, with a co-educational Early Childhood Program, Pre-Kindergarten, and Kindergarten in Bethesda, Maryland. The Upper School Assistant Head of Upper School is responsible for providing academic leadership in support of the Goals and Criteria of Sacred Heart Education, in alignment with best curriculum practices, and in keeping with the aims of the Network’s publication of Sophie’s Gift and will:
- serve as a member of the Upper School Leadership Team and as a member of the Academic Leadership and Management team.
- work closely with the Head of Upper School, Dean of Students, Department Chairs, the Librarian, and the faculty to ensure that the curriculum reflects the Goals and Criteria of Sacred Heart education as best practices in technology and pedagogy.
- coordinate progress reports with Upper School faculty
- collaborates with the Head of Upper School with regards to the Upper School academic program.
- engages in classroom observations in coordination with Head of Upper School and Academic Department Chairs.
- participate in the Faculty Evaluation and Growth process as required.
- oversee the Global Studies Certificate Program in Upper School and coordinate with the STEM Director regarding program alignment
- oversee Sacred Heart Network Exchange Program.
- oversee Honor Board.
- maintain the good order of classrooms, buildings and students, and shares the responsibility for the good order of the institution.
- assist with Admissions and Development activities as requested.
- coordinate with the School Registrar regarding academic records for Upper School.
- attend all professional meetings and professional development opportunities as required.
- monitor own professional growth and continuing education.
- maintain professional confidentiality regarding student and collegial information.
- support the religious mission of the School and attend all-school and division religious activities.
- participate in the Social Action program, as assigned.
- in absence of the Head of Upper School, acts in that role in his/her stead.
In addition, the Assistant Head of Upper School will have responsibilities in the following areas:
Teaching
- Teach one course in an area of expertise, and model commitment to the Goals and Criteria of Sacred Heart Education.
- Implement divisional and departmental curricula.
- Develop, revise and align the academic program to insure an articulated experience for all students.
- Construct and submit outlines, course descriptions as requested.
- Meet with counselors, tutors, specialists or school departments as required.
- Assist those students who need additional support or enrichment, outside scheduled classes or hours as necessary.
- Serve as a student advisor.
- Maintain academic and attendance records of assigned students.
Student Supervision
- Provide direct supervision of assigned students and, with colleagues, of all students at Stone Ridge sanctioned activities.
Communication
- Maintain communication with parents regarding student progress through progress reports, interim reports, report cards as required by the administration, and communicate, as necessary, by email and phone.
- Create and maintain course page(s) on Inside Stone Ridge.
- Meet with parents at scheduled meetings, assigned conferences and as requested.
Essential skills and experience:
- Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field.
- Demonstrated expertise in pedagogy and instruction as well as flexibility and collaborative spirit.
- Teaching experience or experience working with children.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Proficient with educational technology as it applies to teaching and learning.
- Strong organizational skills.
- A proven track record of providing leadership to a team or department.
- The desire to work in a collaborative role, and as part of a team.
- An articulated enjoyment of working with young adults and with adults committed to delivering excellence in education.
Valued but not required skills and experience:
- Masters Degree in related field
- Significant experience in the area of hire
- Experience supervising and managing teachers
- Experience in strategic planning, or formation of strategic initiatives focused on change and progress in a school environment.
