Calling all Esteemed Leaders! Saint John's Health Center Foundation is seeking a strategic, relationshiporiented Director of Planned Giving to lead a robust and expanding estate and deferred giving program. This is a unique opportunity to build upon exceptional momentum, a highly engaged donor base, and significant unrealized potential-designing and executing a comprehensive planned giving strategy that advances both immediate and longterm philanthropic goals.

The Role:

Reporting to the Chief Philanthropy Officer, the Director of Planned Giving serves as a key philanthropic strategist and trusted relationship builder, responsible for leading Saint John's Health Center Foundation's planned giving program. This highvisibility role operates within a fertile landscape of engaged donors, strong prospect depth, and meaningful opportunities to secure transformational legacy gifts.

The Director provides expert leadership in the development, marketing, and stewardship of complex charitable gifts; interprets and applies relevant legal and regulatory frameworks; and cultivates enduring relationships with donors and their professional advisors. Through thoughtful planning, personalized engagement, and strategic vision, the Director expands the major/planned giving pipeline, secures impactful planned and blended gifts, and broadens the organization's philanthropic constituency.

What You'll Do:

Mission, Values & Leadership Representation



  • Model Saint John's core values of dignity, justice, compassion, integrity, and excellence in all interactions.
  • Serve as a visible ambassador for Saint John's mission to donors, advisors, and community partners.
  • Represent the Foundation in internal and external meetings, committees, and professional or civic forums as appropriate.


Planned Giving Strategy & Program Leadership



  • Develop, implement, and continuously refine a comprehensive planned giving strategy aligned with Saint John's mission, donor interests, and longterm organizational priorities.
  • Create and manage annual and multiyear strategic plans with measurable goals, benchmarks, and outcomes.
  • Establish and lead a Gift Planning Advisory Council composed of financial professionals who serve as ambassadors and strategic advisors.
  • Maintain deep technical expertise across all charitable estate and deferredgiving vehicles.


Donor Identification, Cultivation & Stewardship



  • Identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward donors capable of making significant planned and blended gifts.
  • Design and execute individualized solicitation and stewardship strategies aligned with donors' philanthropic goals and personal circumstances.
  • Manage and grow The Madeleine Society, Saint John's planned giving recognition society, ensuring meaningful engagement and acknowledgment of legacy donors.
  • Respond promptly and thoughtfully to donor inquiries and track estate gifts from notification through probate and completion.


Gift Design, Legal Oversight & Risk Management



  • In consultation with donors' professional advisors, provide general legal and tax information related to bequests, lifeincome gifts, and other planned giving instruments.
  • Draft and review gift illustrations and planned giving documentation.
  • Partner with legal counsel to advise Foundation staff and health center leadership on legal, regulatory, and compliance matters.
  • Implement systems and controls to mitigate legal and fiduciary risk while protecting donor intent and Foundation interests.
  • Assist the COO and CFO in maintaining robust audit trails for planned giving transactions.


Professional Advisor & Community Engagement



  • Build and strengthen strategic referral networks with attorneys, financial and estate planners, realtors, and other advisors.
  • Develop and deliver educational seminars and planned giving programs for donors and professional audiences.
  • Enhance Saint John's visibility and reputation within the professional advisor community.


Marketing, Communications & Donor Records



  • Oversee quality, accuracy, and effectiveness of all planned giving communications and marketing materials.
  • Ensure integrity, accuracy, and strategic use of planned giving donor records and databases.
  • Collaborate closely with Foundation colleagues to integrate planned giving into broader fundraising and donor engagement strategies.


Operations, Governance & Financial Management



  • Develop and manage planned giving budgets and financial projections to support longterm program sustainability.
  • Provide staff support to the Legacy (Planned Giving) Committee and participate in additional committees as assigned.
  • Maintain departmental policies, procedures, objectives, and continuous improvement standards.


Professional Development & Continuous Improvement



  • Maintain and advance professional expertise through continuing education, workshops, and active participation in professional associations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of Saint John's mission and advancement goals.


What You'll Bring:

Education & Credentials



  • Bachelor's Degree (required) ; background in Accounting and/or Financial Planning (preferred) .
  • CFRE and/or CSPG certification (preferred upon hire) .
  • Planned giving coursework, certification, or equivalent professional experience (preferred) .


Experience



  • 6+ years of experience in planned giving or a related field, preferably within a large nonprofit organization.
  • Demonstrated success in estate planning and major gift solicitation.
  • Experience with strategic planning, proposal development, and planned giving portfolio management.
  • Ideal candidates may have served as:
  • Assistant Director of Planned Giving at a large organization, or
  • Director of Planned Giving at a smaller organization seeking growth within a larger, more complex program.

The full pay range is listed in accordance with applicable law. Final compensation will be determined based on qualifications, experience, organizational compensation alignment, and the approved hiring department budget for the position. This position may also be eligible for incentive compensation and benefits.

Further, we want our leaders to live in or near the communities we serve. Therefore, leaders applying for this role will be required to work a hybrid schedule, which consists of three days onsite, two days remote and live within a reasonable commuting distance to the ministry or service area they support and lead.

The successful candidate's placement on the wage range for this position will be determined based upon relevant job experience and other applicable factors. These amounts are the base pay range; additional compensation may be available for this role, such as shift differentials, standby/on-call, overtime, premiums, extra shift incentives, or bonus opportunities.
