Job Description:

The Director of Equipment Maintenance provides site-wide executive leadership for GMP equipment maintenance, reliability engineering, and asset lifecycle management supporting pharmaceutical manufacturing operations. This role is accountable for defining and executing the long-term maintenance and reliability strategy aligned with business objectives, regulatory expectations, and operational excellence standards.

The Director ensures sustained equipment availability, inspection readiness, and continuous improvement across all manufacturing assets and critical utilities. As a key member of the site leadership team, this role partners closely with Manufacturing, Quality, Engineering, Validation, EHS, Supply Chain, and Finance to drive safe, compliant, cost-effective, and scalable operations while enabling future growth and capital expansion.

Equipment Maintenance, Metrology & Asset Strategy

  • Drive equipment uptime to maximize production opportunity.
  • Define and own the site maintenance and asset management strategy for all GMP manufacturing equipment and utilities.
  • Establish standards for preventive, predictive, and condition-based maintenance programs that optimize equipment uptime, risk management, and cost efficiency.
  • Lead long-term asset lifecycle planning, including obsolescence mitigation, spare parts strategy, and capital refresh planning.
  • Serve as the executive escalation authority for critical equipment reliability, safety, and risk issues.
  • Drive adoption of industry best practices, digital maintenance solutions, data analytics, and emerging technologies.

Leadership, Culture & Organizational Effectiveness

  • Provide inspirational leadership to managers and technical leaders across maintenance, reliability, and engineering functions.
  • Build a strong performance-driven culture grounded in safety, compliance, accountability, operational excellence, and talent development.
  • Establish workforce plans, organizational design, and succession and development strategies to ensure long-term capability and resilience.
  • Coach and develop leaders, ensuring strong bench strength and technical depth across the organization.

Regulatory Compliance & Inspection Readiness (System Owner)

  • Ensure all equipment maintenance systems comply with FDA, EMA, and global GMP requirements.
  • Function as system owner for maintenance-related compliance programs, on time maintenance completion, deviations, change management, CAPAs, maintenance SOPs, and periodic reviews.
  • Lead strategic responses to regulatory and client inspections related to equipment, facilities, and maintenance systems.
  • Ensure inspection-ready documentation, governance, and audit sustainability at all times.

Cross-Functional & Executive Partnership

  • Act as a strategic business partner to Manufacturing, Quality, Validation, Engineering, EHS, and Supply Chain leadership.
  • Provide oversight and technical support for equipment qualification (Cx/FAT/SAT/IQ/OQ/PQ) and major change initiatives.
  • Support capacity planning, tech transfers, new product introductions, and operational scale-up activities.
  • Represent equipment maintenance strategy and risk posture in site and corporate governance forums.

Financial, Capital & Vendor Governance

  • Own maintenance operating budgets, long-range financial planning including capital forecasts.
  • Establish governance models for external vendors, service providers, and contractors to ensure performance, compliance, and value delivery.
  • Partner with Finance and Procurement to optimize total cost of ownership and return on investment.

Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, Chemical, or related discipline)
  • 15+ years of progressive experience in maintenance, reliability, or engineering within regulated manufacturing environments
  • 10+ years in pharmaceutical or biopharmaceutical manufacturing
  • 8+ years of senior leadership experience managing multi-level technical organizations
  • Demonstrated success leading:
    • Site-wide maintenance and reliability programs
    • Regulatory inspections and audit readiness
    • Capital planning and lifecycle asset management
    • Cross-functional, executive-level initiatives
  • Proven ability to manage large budgets, complex vendor ecosystems, and enterprise risk

Preferred:

  • MBA or Master's degree in Engineering or Business
  • Certified Maintenance & Reliability Professional (CMRP)
  • PMP, Lean, Six Sigma, ISPE/PDA certifications

Working Environment:

  • Combination of office and manufacturing floor environment
  • Occasional exposure to aseptic and controlled manufacturing areas
  • Must be able to move throughout the facility as required

Location: Spokane, WA - On Site, Full- -Time

Shift: Mon-Fri Days

Hiring Wage: $170,100 - $272,200, with opportunities for growth, promotion, and annual raises.
