Responsibilities

ECS is seeking a Structural Associate Principal to join our team in Miami, FL. This position provides technical leadership and oversight for building science and structural consulting projects. The role is responsible for mentoring junior staff, maintaining strong client relationships, and ensuring the technical quality and financial success of projects. The Associate Principal will also support business development efforts and serve as the engineer in charge for structural consulting assignments.

Responsibilities

Technical Leadership

  • Demonstrate strong knowledge across a wide range of topics relevant to building science & infrastructure related testing and consulting services, and expert-level competency in one primary field. Assist staff with technical issues related to testing and consulting as needed.
  • Collaborate with staff members on a variety of projects. Actively mentor junior staff and support overall development of the team. Leading and coaching junior staff members.
  • Attend project meetings and provide solutions to technical and administrative issues as necessary.
  • Possess exceptional technical writing skills and have mastered basic conventions of spelling, grammar, and professional content/tone. Knows, understands, and uses standard industry terms and jargon. Effectively proofreads their own written work.
  • Perform Principal review of reports and deliverables ensuring that reports are accurate, consistent, and of high quality. May be assisted in reviews through advice from and collaboration with more senior Principal staff. May work with a committee or subcommittee to write and improve project templates.
  • Assist in the development of project teams and serve as an active member of a project team when required. Provide advice, counsel, and peer review to ensure the technical appropriateness and accuracy of field work, including subcontractor work, and all documents and reports, as required.

Project Management & Oversight

  • Oversee building science & infrastructure projects. Assist junior staff with resolution of issues and training of field staff.
  • Oversee project budgets and review change orders and invoices. Assist with collections efforts. Assist junior staff with how to communicate testing and/or budget concerns.
  • Oversee the preparation and review of proposals and change orders.
  • Supervise subordinate staff regarding work assignments to ensure properly trained and experienced personnel are assigned. Perform Principal oversight and review of projects in accordance with ECS Principal Policy. Ensure that deliverables are completed and projects are closed out in accordance with ECS policies and guidelines. Assist with client interaction/discussion regarding findings and conclusions of reports. Ensure that the deliverables follow the scope of work proposed by ECS and explain deviations as needed.
  • Interact with senior level staff to ensure that project set up and implementation procedures are being completed.

Business Development & Client Engagement

  • Market our services. Maintain and further develop the client database. Demonstrate a successful history of business development performance. Ability to develop new clients/projects by working with past clients or as the primary contact with new clients by seeking out new projects that may exist or are being formulated and participating in the development of proposals, as required.
  • Act as a public relations ambassador being proactive in presenting and communicating the capabilities and strengths of the company to all.
  • Keep regional personnel informed as necessary.

Staff Leadership & Organizational Support

  • Assist senior staff with staffing decisions to maintain appropriate staff levels. Keep staff informed of current regulations and their implications on current and future projects. Maintain required internal documentation of regulations and any ECS process changes.
  • Other duties as assigned

Structural Consulting

  • Demonstrate expert knowledge of federal, state, and local codes, laws, and guidelines related to structural work, and expert understanding of their implications on findings and conclusions in studies. Understand the client's goals for each project and provide guidance that balances those goals with applicable regulations and project costs.
  • Provide coaching to junior staff on best practices, technical execution, and professional communication standards.
  • Supervise and direct junior staff performing field investigations and testing including anchor bolt testing, bond testing, GPR, coring, chipping, sample extraction, sounding, and other field testing activities. Ensure work performed aligns with the proposed scope of services and evaluate any deviations to determine potential impact on the project or client objectives.
  • Supervise junior staff conducting structural condition assessments and investigations. Oversee multiple projects simultaneously and evaluate any deviations from the proposed scope of work to determine potential impacts on project outcomes.
  • Supervise and oversee structural design activities performed by junior staff. Serve as the professional in responsible charge for the project and assume responsibility for design calculations, technical analysis, and preparation of drawings.
  • Perform or supervise construction administration services including RFI responses, shop drawing reviews, budget updates, and participation in owner or project meetings as required. Review drawings, RFIs, and other project communications prior to issuance. Consider financial and logistical implications of decisions and provide timely responses while managing scope and budget expectations.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • 8+ years of related experience
  • Bachelor and/or Master of Science in Civil (Structural) Engineering, or Architectural Engineering
  • Active Professional Engineer (P.E.) license required; Special Inspector (SI) certification preferred
  • Experience providing litigation support, including handling 558 claims
