JOB SUMMARY

The Lead Hovercraft Captain/Mechanic will serve as the primary operator and technical expert for WNS's hovercraft fleet to maintain two remote oilfield islands. This role combines hands-on piloting responsibilities with mechanical maintenance, safety oversight, and program management. The successful candidate will be responsible for safe hovercraft operations, performing mechanical repairs and maintenance, and developing/implementing journey management and preventive maintenance programs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Operations

  • Serve as lead captain for hovercraft operations, piloting vessels in various weather and arctic ocean conditions

  • Conduct pre-flight and post-flight inspections to ensure operational readiness

  • Coordinate flight schedules and logistics with field operations teams

  • Train and mentor additional operators

Maintenance & Mechanical

  • Perform routine and emergency mechanical repairs on hovercraft systems including engines, lift systems, propulsion, and control systems

  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues and implement effective solutions

  • Maintain detailed maintenance records and parts inventory

  • Coordinate with vendors and manufacturers for specialized repairs and parts procurement

  • Ensure all maintenance activities comply with manufacturer specifications and safety standards

Safety & Program Management

  • Develop, implement, and oversee the Journey Management Program for all hovercraft operations

  • Create and maintain a comprehensive Preventive Maintenance (PM) Program

  • Conduct risk assessments for planned routes and operations

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable safety regulations and company policies

  • Lead safety meetings and incident investigations as needed

  • Develop and update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for hovercraft operations.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum 5 years of experience operating hovercrafts or similar specialized vehicles

  • Proven mechanical aptitude with experience in diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems

  • Strong understanding of preventive maintenance principles and practices

  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and repair complex mechanical systems

  • Experience developing and implementing safety programs

  • Excellent communication and documentation skills

  • Ability to work independently and make sound decisions in remote locations

  • Valid driver's license with clean driving record

  • Ability to pass pre-employment drug screening and background check

  • Ability to work in remote field locations with varying weather conditions

  • Must be available on-call for emergency operations

  • Travel required between operational sites.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

  • Experience in oil and gas field operations

  • Formal training in hovercraft operations or marine vessel operations

  • Certifications in diesel mechanics, hydraulics, or electrical systems

  • Experience with journey management or fleet management programs

  • Experience working in Arctic or remote environments.

WORKING ON THE NORTH SLOPE

While working on the North Slope of Alaska, your lodging and food will be provided to you. All camps provide warm meals and options to grab a quick lunch or snack from the spike rooms. Rooms vary from single status to shared rooms where your roommate may work the opposite shift. Wi-Fi and Internet is free and available within the camp. Services vary depending upon where you are staying; however, most facilities offer housekeeping, self-serve laundry, commissary, mail, gyms, TV/Theater Room, etc. Each facility will have its own accommodation and policies that will be reviewed upon on-site orientation.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

The physical demands and work environment requirements outlined below are representative of those necessary to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. A post-offer, pre-hire Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) will be conducted to ensure an employee's ability to safely meet job standards. Candidates must be able to comply with the ASRC Energy Driving Records and Motor Vehicle Use Policy, successfully pass a pre-employment drug test which may include both urinalysis and hair testing, and meet the physical requirements of working in a remote location under arctic conditions. In addition, candidates will be required to pass a Fit-for-Duty Exam, complete a background check, and obtain and maintain an access badge for the work location.
