JOB DESCRIPTION

The Epic Clinical Applications Lead is responsible for the technical design, implementation, optimization, and ongoing support of Epic clinical applications, with primary ownership of Ambulatory and Wisdom. This role balances approximately 50% hands-on Epic analyst work and 50% people leadership, providing both deep application expertise and strong team oversight. The Applications Lead manages and develops a team of Epic analysts supporting Gallery, Care Everywhere, and HIM workflows, while also serving as a hands-on subject matter expert for Ambulatory and Wisdom configuration, optimization, and upgrades. This role partners closely with clinical, operational, and IT stakeholders to translate patient care and business needs into scalable, compliant Epic solutions that support high-quality care delivery, system stability, and organizational growth.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead advanced Epic application design, build, and optimization efforts, serving as the primary owner for Ambulatory and Wisdom and ensuring solutions are scalable, supportable, and aligned with clinical, regulatory, and enterprise standards.
  • Act as the senior technical authority and escalation point for assigned Epic clinical applications, accountable for system stability, performance, and long-term sustainability, and for translating complex clinical and business requirements into effective Epic solutions.
  • Balance hands-on Epic analyst responsibilities with people leadership, providing direct configuration and troubleshooting support while managing and developing analysts supporting Gallery, Care Everywhere, and HIM workflows.
  • Drive Epic governance, prioritization, and roadmap planning by contributing expert input to enterprise governance bodies and collaborating with Infrastructure, Security, Integration, and Data teams to ensure secure, compliant interoperability and data exchange.
  • Lead change and release governance for Epic, including version upgrades, enhancements, and production deployments, ensuring disciplined testing, validation, and release readiness with minimal impact to clinical operations.
  • Provide day-to-day leadership, performance management, and mentorship to Epic application analysts, setting clear expectations for build quality, documentation, certification maintenance, and adherence to Epic and organizational standards.
  • Lead enterprise-wide optimization initiatives, using operational metrics, clinician feedback, and system data to identify improvement opportunities, perform root cause analysis, and deliver workflow and configuration enhancements that improve care delivery and user experience.
  • Oversee multi-site Epic deployments and expansions, including standardized build execution, onboarding, training coordination, go-live support, and post-go-live stabilization and optimization.
  • Serve as a trusted partner to clinical and operational leaders, acting as a primary point of accountability for application outcomes, issue resolution, and strategic alignment across departments and sites.
  • Ensure rigorous change control, testing, and documentation practices in partnership with QA and validation teams, supporting regression testing, integration validation, and maintenance of high-quality system documentation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, recognizing that responsibilities may evolve with organizational and clinical priorities.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of 8 years of experience supporting enterprise healthcare applications, including at least 1 years in a people leadership role with demonstrated accountability for technical outcomes and team performance.
  • Extensive hands-on Epic experience in application build, configuration, testing, troubleshooting, and optimization within large-scale healthcare environments, including participation in Epic implementations, major upgrades, or enterprise-wide enhancements.
  • Primary experience supporting Epic clinical workflows, with depth in Ambulatory and familiarity with Wisdom, along with working knowledge of related domains such as Gallery, Care Everywhere, and HIM.
  • Proven ability to translate complex clinical and operational workflows into effective Epic solutions through close partnership with clinicians, operational leaders, and business stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated experience leading and mentoring application analysts, including setting priorities, balancing support and project work, conducting peer reviews, and supporting professional development and Epic certification maintenance.
  • Experience leading or significantly contributing to Epic implementations, major system upgrades, platform enhancements, or multi-site rollouts, including planning, execution, and post-go-live stabilization.
  • Hands-on experience with Epic change management, including managing support tickets, coordinating enhancement requests, participating in governance or advisory forums, and adhering to change control and release processes.
  • Experience collaborating with vendors, third-party partners, and internal IT teams (Infrastructure, Security, Integration) to support secure integrations and reliable system performance.
  • Active Epic certification in a relevant clinical application, with the ability and willingness to maintain required certifications. Certification in either one Ambulatory or Wisdom is a must. Certifications in HIM, Gallery, and CareEverywhere are preferred.
  • Strong communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to lead technical discussions, influence decision-making, and communicate effectively with clinical, operational, and technical audiences.
