Hiring Range:This position's hiring range is anticipated to be $80,000 to $85,000 annually, depending on experience, plus great benefits!
Position Summary: The Senior Staff Accountant will have a direct impact on financial reporting and compliance with exposure to various revenue streams and business operations and is responsible for typical accounting tasks related to month-end and year-end closing. These tasks include bank and balance sheet reconciliations, booking monthly journal entries, sales tax filings, and compiling daily or weekly reports. The Senior Staff Accountant will be part of a small and dynamic team devoted to growth and development.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Perform timely and accurate month-end journal entries and bank account reconciliations as part of the assigned monthly tasks. Prepare and analyze assigned balance sheet account reconciliations, researching the appropriateness of balances and ensuring accuracy of accounts; Maintain organized and updated supporting spreadsheets for monthly reconciliations and other accounting tasks. For the various supplemental systems used, prepare accurate month-end GL imports for assigned revenue streams. These may include online store, point of sale, lodging and clinic revenue. Must be proactive in understanding system data, reporting and general ledger impacts. Understand the financial data flow from our CRM into the general ledger; understand how to research transactions and communicate corrections when needed. Identify, research, and resolve accounting discrepancies to ensure accurate reporting in the general ledger; communicate with internal staff as necessary to assist in research and resolution. Assist with monthly, quarterly and annual sales tax filings for approximately 30 states. Assist with preparation of schedules for annual IRS Form 990 and 990-T filing including fulfilling and responding to requests from tax/audit firm. Collaborate with Accounting Team, Business Operations Team, and members of other departments on issues as they arise; respond to accounting inquiries and requests in a timely and professional manner. Complete other ad hoc projects as needed.
Genuine passion for the mission of Best Friends Animal Society. Bachelor's degree in accounting, business accounting, or finance is required. MBA and/or CPA preferred. Minimum of 5 years of experience in accounting roles, preferably in a nonprofit organization. Previous auditor experience preferred but not required. Previous experience compiling and filing sales tax returns helpful. Strong knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).Strong technology skills are critical, particularly expertise with Microsoft Excel. Workday software experience a plus. Very strong analytical and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail. Must demonstrate a high level of integrity and confidentiality. Highly motivated and organized with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks to ensure deadlines are met. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Effective collaboration and interpersonal skills.
Ability to see and sort a variety of printed and online information. Ability to work at a computer and/or on the phone for extended periods of time with repetitive typing, arm and hand motion. Must be available and responsive during core business hours. Occasional travel may be required to attend training or other Best Friends sponsored events. May require availability outside of normal business hours, ability to work overtime, including evenings and weekends occasionally as needed to meet required deadlines.
