Under general and/or immediate supervision from the Equipment Mechanic Supervisor, makes minor and major mechanical repairs to gasoline or diesel powered automotive, heavy construction and other power-driven equipment. This is the full journey level class within the Equipment Mechanic series. Employees within this class are distinguished from the Equipment Mechanic I by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned including highly skilled mechanical work in the repair and maintenance of gas and diesel powered equipment including the more difficult repairs and overhauls. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. May exercise functional or technical supervision over lower level equipment maintenance staff. Position Snapshot/A Day in the Life: The Equipment Mechanic II position requires a CDL with a Tanker Endorsement (must obtain by 6 months of employment) and supports the City of Fontana's fleet of 480 vehicles, including those for the Police Department. The day starts with assignments from the Lead Equipment Mechanic, focusing on preventive maintenance, urgent repairs, and customer service for various city departments. Responsibilities include performing oil changes, fluid services, safety inspections, and complex repairs such as tire balancing, brake replacements, and suspension work. Accurate diagnosis using scan tools and electrical testing is essential to minimize vehicle downtime. The Equipment Mechanic II also troubleshoots electrical systems, handles basic welding tasks, and conducts BIT inspections to identify potential safety issues. In addition to vehicle work, they perform generator inspections and manage parts inventory, ensuring availability and organization. Vendor interaction includes ordering parts and ensuring quality, along with clear communication with city departments regarding repair needs and timelines. Throughout the day, collaboration with other team members is key. By the end of the shift, the Equipment Mechanic II ensures the fleet is safe, reliable, and mission-ready, demonstrating technical skills, problem-solving, and customer service to support community operations.

Essential Functions

The employee must have the ability to:
- Inspect, diagnose, and locate mechanical difficulties on City automobiles, trucks, and a variety of diesel and gasoline powered maintenance, and construction equipment.
- Replace or repair faulty parts including wheel bearings, clutches, or oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms, and related parts and equipment.
- Overhaul, repair, and adjust engines, transmissions, differentials, and clutches.
- Tune up engines, replacing such components as generators, distributors, relays lights and switches.
- Diagnose and repair computerized control systems, ignition systems, power steering and cooling systems.
- Repair, adjust and replace brake systems including disc, hydraulic and air brakes.
- Weld, fabricate and assemble parts and equipment for the City automotive and heavy equipment.
- Maintain work, time, and material records.
- Perform any other tasks or functions deemed necessary to the daily operations of the employer.

Working Conditions:Position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. Incumbents may be required to lift, carry and/or push objects weighing 25 pounds or more. The position requires near and far vision when inspecting work. Incumbents work in all weather conditions, use cleaning and lubricating chemicals which may expose the employee to fumes, dust and air contaminants, drive motorized vehicles, heavy equipment and work around moving traffic and often works with constant interruptions. The incumbent is also required to climb ladders, use power and noise producing tools and equipment.

Experience and Training Guidelines

A combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. The employee must have knowledge of:
- Tools, equipment, and procedures used in the overhaul, repair, and adjustment of gas and diesel powered equipment.
- Operation and care of internal combustion engines.
- Safe work practices.
- Operating and repair characteristics of a wide variety of City owned light and heavy equipment.
- Operation and care of internal combustion engines and hydraulic equipment.
- Methods, materials, equipment and tools used in welding and fabrication work.
- Operating and repair characteristics of a wide variety of City owned equipment.
Ability to:
- Use a variety of tools and equipment with skill.
- Maintain a variety of shop and repair records.
- Understand and follow oral and written directions.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Perform journey level equipment mechanical work including the trouble-shooting of equipment for both major and minor repairs work.
- Work independently in the absence of supervision.
- Accurately determine mechanical repair needs and estimate the cost and time of repairs.
- Assist in the training and supervision of less experienced personnel.
Experience: One (1) year of mechanical maintenance experience, including practical experience in the maintenance of both diesel and gas powered equipment.
Preferred Experience:
- At least three (3) years of professional mechanic experience.
- Experience with Department of Transportation BIT inspections.
- Knowledge of CNG systems
- Experience with Construction equipment repair
Education: Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance including specialized training in the maintenance and repair of gas and diesel powered equipment. Licenses/Certifications: Possession of, or ability to obtain within six (6) months of appointment, a California Class "A" License with Tanker Endorsement.
