Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit
The College of Arts and Sciences promotes discovery and learning by students and faculty in the sciences, the humanities, and the arts. The College empowers students to succeed by embracing the challenges of a complex, changing world.
Position Summary
Duties for the Associate Dean for Research include:

  • Provides strategic leadership in developing and refining the College's research mission and activities towards meeting current and future funding goals.
  • Facilitates faculty development of fundable and sustainable research programs. Along with the Office of Research and Engagement (ORE), provides mentorship by helping faculty identify their goals, find resources, and grow their program of research.
  • Assists faculty to form successful collaborative research groups that integrate and support individual programs of research. Creates mechanisms to facilitate team projects within the College and across all units at UNCG.
  • Works with existing interdisciplinary groups in the College, such as the Humanities Network and Consortium (HNAC) and Research and Instruction in STEM Education (RISE).
  • Assists in developing proposals and fellowships along with budgets for submission.
  • Supervises the College's Office of Research and approves proposals on behalf of the College within the Cayuse online system.
  • Coordinates College funding programs for: pilot research that will lead to proposals for significant external funding; travel to funding agencies; external peer review of draft proposals; and summer grant preparation assistance.
  • Chairs the Research Assignment Committee of the College.
  • Represents the College on the UNCG Research Advisory Council and other university forums.
  • Coordinates some of the Department and Program Reviews in the College.
  • Conducts or directs special projects as assigned. Acts in other matters and capacities as delegated by the Dean.


Applicants must be tenured associate or full professors in the College of Arts & Sciences. They should have strong records as teacher-scholars as well as experience in seeking and successfully obtaining external funding in their careers. Because of the diversity in disciplines in the College, nominees should have an interest in and ability to work with faculty from the arts, humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. The new Associate Dean for Research should be interested in supporting faculty from all fields in their grant-seeking activities. We are especially interested in candidates who have ideas about how to bring faculty into the grant-seeking process and how to incentivize the creation of multi-disciplinary teams.
Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. or terminal degree.
  • Tenured associate or full professors in the College of Arts and Sciences with strong records as teacher-scholars, as well as experience in seeking and successfully obtaining external funding in their careers.
  • Because of the diversity in disciplines in the College, applicants should have an interest in and ability to work with faculty from the arts, humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences.
  • interested in supporting faculty from all fields in their grant-seeking activities.
