The purpose of this position is to maintain and repair fire department facilities, apparatus, and equipment. This is accomplished by assisting with the movement of supplies, equipment and apparatus to/from facilities; creating and implementing maintenance programs and schedules; and process paperwork related to repairs. Other duties may include ordering and maintaining parts and supplies and interfacing with other City employees and citizens. This position does not provide direction to other employees.

Essential Functions

The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

  • Maintains the interior of facilities by repairing walls, doors, floors, small appliances, bathroom fixtures, water fountains, pumps, overhead doors and hardware, waxing, painting, and other general maintenance activities.
  • Completes electrical work requests by replacing lights, ballasts, light switches and electric plugs, making extension cords, on electrical systems.
  • Completes basic plumbing work requests by replacing flush valve kits, bowl wax and faucets, unclogging drains and commodes and performing preventative maintenance on plumbing systems.
  • Completes basic HVAC repairs/pump repairs by installing filters, cleaning condensers, troubleshooting equipment, performing preventative maintenance on HVAC and ice maker systems.
  • Coordinates maintenance activities of fire department vehicles by scheduling maintenance, ensuring vehicle availability, and monitoring repairs completed by third party vendors; tracking and ensuring vehicle registrations and inspections; troubleshooting and completing minor repairs to vehicles and equipment assigned to those vehicles; maintaining records of service performed and prepares monthly reports; and maintaining all service manuals.
  • Moves vehicles and equipment to proper repair facility, monitors third party vendors at city facilities and assists in third party in testing of vehicles and equipment.
  • Maintain supplies and equipment by cleaning warehouse, maintaining inventory and reporting stock deficiencies to appropriate personnel, and cleaning and performing basic maintenance on tools.
  • Assists in communicating with vendors, obtaining estimates, monitoring the quality and completion of third party repairs, and reviews invoices from vendors for accuracy.

Job Requirements

Education and Experience:
Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
- High School diploma or equivalent plus two (2) years of relevant work experience

Certifications:
Valid Texas Class C Driver's License and ability of obtain a Noncommercial Class B Exempt Driver's License within six months
Possession of a Texas Commission on Fire Protection Certification as a basic structural firefighter or be currently enrolled in a Texas Commission on Fire Protection approved fire academy

Overall Physical Strength Demands
Medium - Exerting 20-50 lbs. occasionally, 10-25 lbs. frequently, or up to 10 lbs. constantly.

Reading
Basic - Ability to recognize meaning of common two- or three-syllable words. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in elementary school up to high school. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.

Math
Basic - Ability to perform the four basic arithmetic operations. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in elementary school up to high school. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.

Writing
Basic - Ability to write simple sentences containing subject, verb, and object, and/or series of numbers, names, and addresses. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in elementary school up to high school. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.
