The Opportunity We are seeking a Manager, Business Development (Litigation) to join our Firm. Within this position, the Manager will Initiate, design, and execute on the business development strategies for the litigation department. Additional responsibilities including working closely with the Director, Business Development (Litigation), practice leaders, relevant partners and various members of the Business Development & Marketing (BDM) department to enhance and protect existing client relationships, secure, and establish new client relationships. This position will be based in our Washington D.C. office on a hybrid schedule. Please note that the Firm will not sponsor applicants for work visas for this position.
- Works closely with senior BD leadership, oversees the creation, execution of business development priorities, and plans for the practices and individual partners.
- Drives projects that support the Firm's BD priorities, including the identification of client targets, tracks client pipelines, coordinates industry initiatives, and nurtures key accounts.
- Collaborates with colleagues in the Transactional and Regulatory business development teams on cross-practice opportunities, as well as non-US business development leads on cross-border efforts.
- Provides BD input on a range of marketing projects to ensure the Firm's goals for visibility and reputation-building are aligned with its business development priorities.
- Stays up-to-date on the latest litigation trends and developments, works closely with the Firm's Strategic Intelligence team to provide partners with research and analyses that inform BD activities.
- Establishes and manages key performance indicators to monitor progress and measure results.
- Maintains a strong and current understanding of law firm market trends, competitor activities, and client behaviors to inform BD strategies and tactics.
- Ensures current knowledge of Firm policies and practices, current knowledge of industry trends, and continued professional development for business services professionals.
- Participates in the interviewing, selection and training process.
- Coordinates and oversees department projects, day-to-day operations and long-range plans.
- Monitors time, attendance, overtime, and expense reports to ensure accuracy and compliance with Firm policies.
- Effectively utilizes the Firm's performance management process to communicate performance expectations, monitor performance, coach employees, and manage unsatisfactory performance.
- Oversees employees' work performance and provides guidance in the resolution of problems.
- Initiates disciplinary procedures in collaboration with the Human Resources Department.
- Recommends guidelines and practices to promote efficiency, effectiveness, excellent customer service and improved employee relations, in alignment with the Firm's Core Values.
- Develops and communicates departmental guidelines and procedures.
- Ensures accurate and timely responses to requests for departmental services.
- Engages in strategic (i.e., long-range) planning by developing departmental goals and supporting objectives for assigned department(s).
- Forecasts financial and budget requirements for the department, prepares related reports, and monitors the budget.
- Regular and reliable physical presence to (ex: work as part of a team, meet with clients, use on-site equipment, etc.).
- Demonstrates effective interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills to facilitate effective work relationships with others.
- Manages Firm resources responsibly.
- Complies with and understands Firm operation, policies and procedures.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Demonstrates experience with CRM, Foundation, and other Marketing and Financial databases
- Ability to build rapport and work comfortably with partners
- Consistently demonstrates thought leadership and the implementation of best practices
- Demonstrates strong project management skills
- Current knowledge of industry best practices, trends and techniques
- Knowledge of relevant Firm computer software programs (e.g., Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint), with the ability to learn new software and operating systems
- Knowledge and implementation of the annual budget process
- Demonstrates strong effective interpersonal and communication skills, both verbally and in writing
- Demonstrates close attention to detail
- Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, organizational, and planning skills
- Demonstrates experience with leading and supervising others
- Ability to administer Firm policies and procedures
- Ability to handle multiple projects and shifting priorities
- Ability to make sound decisions and demonstrate a high degree of trustworthiness in handling sensitive matters and maintain confidentiality
- Ability to organize and prioritize work and delegate effectively
- Ability to work well in a demanding and fast-paced environment
- Ability to work well independently as well as effectively within a team
- Ability to personally handle more complex issues/duties requiring independent exercise of discretion and sound judgment

Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree
- Minimum of seven years of business development experience and managerial experience in a law firm or professional services environment
