The Position

2026 Summer Intern - LLM-based Agents (Prescient Design / AI for Drug Discovery)

Department Summary

Prescient Design, part of Genentech's Research and Early Development (gRED) organization, advances drug discovery through cutting-edge machine learning. Our Foundation Models team builds large language models (LLMs) and agent platforms that enable next-generation scientific and biomedical applications across the drug-discovery pipeline.

We are seeking exceptional graduate student interns to join our efforts on one of the largest scientific agent and automation platforms in the industry. Our team focuses on developing and operating the foundational platform that transforms scientific knowledge and actions from thousands of world-class scientists into sharable, reusable tools, workflows, and agents, reshaping how drug discovery operates with large-scale in-house scientific use cases.

This internship position is located in New York City, on-site.

The Opportunity

  • Contribute to cutting-edge efforts bringing LLMs and AI capabilities into real-world drug discovery use cases.

  • Collaborate closely with AI/ML engineers and scientists on engineering and research in a fast-paced environment.

  • Interact with world-class drug discovery experts across Roche at various stages of the drug discovery pipelines.

  • Explore the frontier of LLMs and agents, tackling unsolved scientific problems through novel product design engineering or research.

We offer two tracks for this role:

Option 1: Engineering-focused

  • Own an end-to-end solution: understand scientists' needs, build agents and tools, deploy them and iteratively improve based on scientists' feedback.

  • Contribute to product design and develop new features for the agent platform, such as improved reasoning layers for agent orchestration, or scientific user interfaces that go beyond simple chat interactions.

  • Develop agents capable of building other tools/agents by mining scientific knowledge and workflows from raw data and create scalable automation.

  • Train underlying LLMs using techniques like reinforcement learning to equip them with the knowledge and mindset of scientists.

Option 2: Research-focused

  • Own a research topic inspired by cutting-edge GenAI usage in large-scale scientific scenarios. Examples include inventing evaluation methods for hard-to-verify scientific agent outputs, methods to orchestrate thousands of tools, or algorithms to improve agent reasoning.

  • Own the research agenda and validate hypotheses using large-scale collections of scientific tools, agents, and scientist feedbacks.

  • Publish your observations and innovations at top-tier venues.

Program Highlights

  • Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

  • Program start dates are in May/June (Summer)

  • A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.

  • Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.

  • Work with some of the most talented people in the biotechnology industry.
